Gaviscon: is it possible to OD?

My acid reflux has suddenly accelerated in the past week and the urge to drink large quantities of Gaviscon is getting greater!
Until last week a spoonful twice a day was enough to control it, but now I can feel the acid rising in my throat almost constantly.
So, is there a limit to how much you can take?

TIA

I'm not sure. In my last pregnancy the MW prescribed me some and chuckled, "ooh, you'll be really good with it at first and have a spoonful, then after a while you'll be necking it from the bottle!" which made me not too worried about how much I took. There was a doctor in the room with us who did say, "oh don't tell her that!" but she was sort of laughing too.

According to my bottle, the usual dose is 10-20mls (up to 4 spoonfuls) at a time after meals and before bedtime. Unfortunately the stuff makes me gag so I can't usually manage more than 2 at a time. If you've only been taking one spoonful at a time I'd up the dose a bit to see if it helps.

Im not in any way medically trained BUT After I had my first baby I started getting gallbladder attacks and at first the docs thought it was really bad indigestion, anyway after one attack I had to call a doc out to the house in the night and he asked if I had any gaviscon, which I did and he said take a few really big mouthfuls which I did, then he said just keep drinking it. I must have drank a fair amount of it and he said to me you cant OD on it

I drank it from the bottle neck with that pregnancy and this one, couldn't have managed without it!

I've been told that you can't OD on it. however when i had dc3 I rang my GP and said I'd had half a big bottle one night and I still had heartburn and she prescribed something else (beginning with R ????) which worked better.

I've drunk buckets of the stuff. The only side effect so far on days when I've had too much is being a bit bunged up and a little bit flatulent! Small problem when compared to the hideousness of acid!

right, that sounds fairly conclusive. I will begin knocking it back and warn DH about possible farting attacks. Thank you all

Yep - I just knock it back from the bottle. TBH it never occurred to me to measure it out, but that might be because I had an ulcer years ago and was told to basically drink the stuff for six weeks until the ulcer went away. Do get it on prescription though, as otherwise it works out expensive!

I don't really catre if you can OD on it, my life is not worth living without it. And yes I neck it straight from the bottle, spoonfuls are pointless!!!!

I also neck it straight from the bottle. When I mentioned to the doctor at my last appt that I was suffering with heartburn, she said she normally tells people to carry a bottle of it in every bag (gym, work, handbag etc) and to have as much as I needed. I totally hate the stuff but it does seem to help when it wakes me at 3am!
