Head engaged??

Hi

Up until now my maternity notes have said ceph or ceph free where it talks about positioning, now she has put brim. Does this mean the baby's head has dropped? I'm 36 weeks tomorrow with my first.

Thanks

I feel like I'm starting to waddle too!

Yep, your notes say pretty much the same as mine - and yes it means what you think it does!

"Ceph" just means baby is head down. "Free" means it has not engaged in the pelvis yet. "Brim" means that the head is not engaged but is at the rim of the pelvis and about to start engaging. I had all this at exactly the same time as you.

Today, at 38 weeks 4 days she put "2/5" and said "ah, baby's not going anywhere now" - so I think she means only 2/5 of the head is still above the pelvis. So 0/5 means fully engaged. This sounds wrong, but I'm sure I read it was that way round when I did a google search.... happy to be corrected by those who know more!

I thought when is started talking about fifths it was how far into to pelvis the head is rather than out of it - ie 2/5 would be 2/5 of the head is in the pelvis....not sure where I have got that from, quite possible I have made that up though!!

I just had a check up with my Midwife yesterday at 36 weeks and she said baby is head down and starting to engage. It says 'ceph' and '3-4/5'in my notes.

My understanding is that like auburnlizzy78 says this means 3-4 5ths of the head is still above the brim of the pelvis. So it will be 0/5 when the head is fully engaged. Confusing or what!

I went last week (im now 39 weeks) and was told baby was 4/5 engaged, I also thought that it was good and almost there but in fact means that she could still feel 4/5 of the head! I was a little disapointed!!

NoTeaForMe · 15/09/2010 21:10

Hmm, so is fully engaged 0/5 or 5/5?!?!?! You'd think one of us would know for sure wouldn't you?!

I'm sure it's different for everyone but is there an average length of time it takes to go from 'brim' to 'fully engaged' (whatever that may be?!) my MIL is sure I will be early and I really don't want to be for many reasons!

Thanks

Silly question I guess!

NoTeaForMe fully engaged is 0/5 (when MW cant feel any of baby's head above the brim). Anyway, I heard that it doesnt really matter how much baby is engaged because things can change quire rapidly.

little bit disappointed now, midwife today said that i was 4/5, took this as meaning baby was almost engaged :( thanks for clearing this up but need i need a notes tranlator Confused!

Dont worry- I was due yesterday and baby is still bobbing like a cork- head down but just doesnt want to commit (think he wants to be a Libra instead of a Virgo).

if it is any consolation my ds was engaged 8 weeks before he was born and my dd engaged when I went into labour.
