Pelvic Floor Exercises - How and How Many?

Hi All,

Allthough it may be inevitable I don't want to join the Tena Lady club just yet, so i have started to do some pelvic floor exercises - or at least I think I have!

Does doing the exercises involve tensing the muscles you use to stop yourself weeing (sorry TMI), or is it something else?

Also how many each day? I started them yesterday and decided to do a round of them during each TV ad break (I watched TV for about 2 hours). Is this enough?

Sorry 1st time mum so clueless!

The advice in the NHS book thing i have says 3 sets of 8 each day building up from holding it from 5 seconds to 10 seconds. Check in there.

I do 6 sets a day - apparently there are 3 sets of muscles you need to clench, being those that you use to urinate, vaginal muscles and anal ones. I have no idea if I am clenching all three but I try my best! I do 10 where I hold each one for 10 seconds, then 10 quicker ones. I was really good until recently but have been getting lazy... this thread has reminded me that I am currently 2 sets behind for today! :)

my midwife said to do 10, holding each for 5-10 seconds, then also do 10 quick ones, at around a second each.
She said, to remind you, do them each time you sit down with a drink, for example, and you'll soon not forget to do them

ALSO, you hold the muscles that stop you peeing AND the muscles that would stop you farting. Blush

My friend is having physio for her pelvic floor, she was told very important to do them standing up, made a huge difference. Am on my third pregnancy and they definitely feel weaker without going tmi !!!
