hello

i am 16 weeks pregnant, have been for a 12 week scan and one appointment with my midwife at my local GP surgery. i have so far had a happy and reasonably healthy pregnancy (bar the sickness, fatigue etc) with no complications. i am a 21 year old university student.

this afternoon i had a phone call from a sure start midwife saying that the midwife i had seen at the GP surgery had referred me to her. she then went onto make arrangements with me for a home visit in 2 weeks time...

my midwife hadn't mentioned this to me so i am now a bit confused about what it will entail. is having a home visit from a sure start midwife at 18 weeks, normal? and what can i expect from her visit?

thanks

emilie

my daughter had one aswell, she is 17,they give advice and they said they would come to our house instead of her goingt the gp for antenatal, but my daughter declined as she enjoys going to the gps and meeting other mums, and she is on the building blocks scheme,so we already have a midwife coming out.

Hiya,

I'm just about to start work as a sure start midwife, currently work on labour ward.

Where I'm going to be I think that anyone can self refer to Sure Start but comunity midwives and GPs, Health Visitors may point people in the direction if they think they could benefit from the extra support. I suppose they've assumed that as you're a 21 year old student that it might help, which is maybe a little patronising but hopefully was done with good intentions.

The Sure Start m/w will probably run through what classes are available at the local sure start centre - antenatal classes, parentcraft classes, young mum groups, postnatal groups, breastfeeding groups, baby massage, etc. You can decide what if anything you want to do. The Sure Start centre where I'm going to be looks really nice, there's a drop in soft play area as well as the timetabled classes.
