I am booked in for a nuchal scan at 12 weeks privately, to assess the risk of Downs. My friend has told me that they can also tell you the sex of the baby then is that true?

hi depends where you go , had DS1 nuchal scan at londons fetal medical centre with Prof Nicoladies, and he said he could tell me if i wanted to know, i didn't, but with DC2 a few weeks ago at a different centre, nothing was mentioned about being able to tell, so i guess maybe it depends on the quality of the scanner, and maybe /possibly experience of the sonographer??

Neither of my muchal scans at the FMC told me the sex however I did have a CVS there with #2 at 12 weeks and that told me she was definitely a girl.

I think that 12 weeks is normally too early to really tell and so I think in most cases, they will tell you at the 20 week scan if you want to know. Even at 20 weeks, when they will generally tell you the gender (or a bit earlier if you have an earlier scan - I had a scan at 16 weeks and she was able to tell me then), they can still get it wrong. But the only way to be totally sure is a CVS or Amnio, otherwise, they can't be 100% sure!
