My friends have only started telling me the full extent of their labours now Im pregnant. And 2 of them crapped... Id heard it before but when my friends gave me sugar coated versions of their labours, I thought, Ah it cant be that common!

So, through the anonymous medium of the internet forum, tell me, how common is this really?! And what can I do to stop it!!!

I bet I did crap then but no-one told me Shock

sotough · 13/09/2010 21:26

ok, i'm going to break the mould here and say i really did care about whether i did one or not and was paranoid about it. i am 95pc sure i didn't (i hadn't had any pain relief and was all too horribly aware of what was going on down below) but that may have been entirely down to luck and the fact that I didn't have any urge to push at any stage of the labour so all pushing was very forced rather than uncontrolled. (unfortunately - it made for a much worse labour) And obviously i can't be totally sure I didn't. If i did, then it was dealt with extremely discreetly and nobody mentioned it.
i wouldn't care much about what the midwives would think but wouldn't fancy my husband seeing it..
i suppose the bottom line, no pun intended, is it's not something you can control, or nobody would do it.

DinaLady · 13/09/2010 21:32

Lol at these, i did with DS2 in my livingroom in front of 4 Paramedics, my SIL (who was training to be a midwife at the time) and my DP, It was huuuuuge Shock

They were silent for a min then i remembered someone saying "better open a window"
Sadly i thought that was the baby till my contractions started worse about a min later lol i was too busy to care and no one else cared after because of the beautiful little baby Smile

Don't worry you really really wont care. Smile

I was more concerned about farting than pooing when I was in labour. I knew that the MW would discreetly whisk away any stray poo, but there's not much she could have done to diguise a fart. Apart from maybe pretend she'd farted, or whip out the air freshener.

I was admitted to hospital to be induced, which took ages, so I ended up having lunch, tea, breakfast and another lunch before DS made an appearance - and all the meals (apart from breakfast) contained farty things like sprouts, green beans, chick peas etc.
I apologised to the MW in advance in case I farted on her.
Luckily before labour really got going my bowels went into overdrive, so there was no poo or farts left by the time it came to push.
Sorry TMI Blush.

To make up for my lack of poo, when DS was born and the MW put him in my arms, he crapped on my arm.

rastababi · 13/09/2010 21:58

Eaglebird my DD also kindly gave me that gift too upon her arrival. As I lay there, embracing my new daughter, gazing into her eyes and feeling the love.........she shat all over me Grin

cardamomginger · 14/09/2010 00:04

I was about to ask for TMI and find out what happens if you poo in the birthing pool and your poos are of the wetter variety (likely if I do it - I have IBS Grin). But I see that rastababi has addressed that particular fun time earlier in the thread. Oh crikey. This is NOT going to be good!! And how hygienic will it be for my poor DC - all lovely and new and pink and soft and perfect - and then plunged into a pool which has had my crap in it.

rastababi · 14/09/2010 10:20

cardamomginger My friend was devastated that she ended up not having a water birth like she'd planned far more than the poo issue! Honestly, the MW would have seen it aaaaaaall before Smile

NatzCNL · 14/09/2010 11:50

I am crying with laughter! DinaLady that was hilarious! It is very true though, you just dont care when you are trying to push your baby out. With my first DD, I actually pooed and wee'd a bit with one pushing episode, I was surprised and apologised to the midwife, she just laughed and told me not to worry as it's all heading down that way and to just concentrate on getting the baby out.
With DD2 I honestly couldnt tell you if I did or not, but am pretty sure I did. You really just dont care & the MW's are so professional, they see it with pretty much every birth.
Good luck with the new baby, forget about the birth, it's only a small part of the begining of your new life xx

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 14/09/2010 12:16

Pretty high. I'm fairly sure I didn't with DS, but (a) my bowels had gone into overdrive a couple of days before and (b) I'd then spent the best part of two days in labour and vomiting constantly so I doubt there was anything in my digestive system to be pooed out by the end. I definitely did a little one with DD but mw cleared it away very discreetly.

marge2 · 14/09/2010 12:20

Believe me - that will be the very last thing on your mind. I didn't crap ( I think!!) but I did puke!!

PlanetEarth · 14/09/2010 12:41

I did with one out of two. Yes, I did care, but hey, what can you do about it?

pearlsandtwinset · 14/09/2010 12:48

My friend in labour excitedly said 'my waters have broken', no one said anything so she kept going on about it until her husband had to have a quiet word that she had wet herself.

I pooed. It felt great Grin

The only way to definitely stop it is to have a cesarean I suppose...

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/09/2010 12:53

I honestly don't know if I did ither time.

I had natural deliveries with just TENS and gas and air, so I wasn't out of it.

MW's were very discreet if I did.

OP - go with it, it won't be the thing at the front of your mind when things get going.

xx

Octaviapink · 14/09/2010 13:47

It's very hard not to! Particularly in certain positions, because the baby's head comes down shoving all before it (including whatever happens to be in your bowel!). But as everyone says, it really won't matter at the time, and the midwives are VERY good at whisking everything away.

Poppet45 · 14/09/2010 14:13

Oh this is the thread of the day, am crying at the pooing on babies heads, husbands in placenta buckets, babies saying hello with a crap on mummy and poor dinalady mistaking a dump for her babe.
I crapped during the pushing phase and literally didn't give a shit. My midwife - who hadn't spotted DS was in an unbirthable sideways position and who had been telling me I wasn't pushing properly, told me to pretend to do a poo, so I did one, or maybe two, or... for real and suddenly she was praising my pushing technique! Shows what she knew. I also walked starkers from my failed waterbirth to a theatre for an em c section. And I am shy. It's amazing what six bottles of gas and air will do to a gal.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 14/09/2010 14:39

not to make the OP worry, but it was the first poo after the birth that worried me more,

having had huge amounts of internal and external stitches I was terrified, because just coughing or sneezing made me feel like my insides were going to fall out.
(luckily I didn't poo for over a week after the birth)

Just don't do what one of my friends did - she felt like she wanted to have a poo and convinced the student midwife to let her go to the toilet,
well guess where her DS2 was born
yep while she was standing in the toilet, apparently she had to catch him to stop him from falling in.

buttonmoon78 · 14/09/2010 15:22

Mammie - I've got IBS so ALL my poos are a little bit wet and sloppy (sorry - TMI!).

However, I am not aware of pooing in any of my 3 labours. And it's not something my DH would ever let me forget if it happened - he'd tease me for years! Grin

But if you do - you'll have a lot of other things on your mind, I promise!

buttonmoon78 · 14/09/2010 15:28

Oh, DinaLady - regardless of the poo situation, I might have just wet myself a bit with laughing so much!

anonacfr · 14/09/2010 15:34

I pooed both times. Didn't see it but smelt it. Grin

EdgarAllInPink · 14/09/2010 15:39

all 3 times to some extent.

though 1st poo after is the baddy.

bluepanda · 14/09/2010 18:13

I had real speedy delivery with DS2 - had not even been examined when i had such an urge to poo. I can remember thinking, god, i'm going to poo, I'll have to poo or i won't be able to concentrate on pushing, MY GOD, this is the worst poo ever!! The i heard the midwife (who was trying to examine me) say in a surprised tone, oh, there's baby's head! Turns out my giant turd was actually baby...Grin altho DH informs me 'a bit of poo came out at same time'

Easywriter · 14/09/2010 18:19

Am loving this post!

I think you're lucky if you don't poo.

I did (I think) with both of mine. Can't be sure with the first as my sister and DP are vague and unwilling to be honest.

For the second delivery I definitely curled one out.

You'll get over it eventually, especially when you suss all the other opportunities for sharing of body fluids (and solids) that motherhood gives rise to.

missp2010 · 14/09/2010 18:38

I had cs's for both of my dc.....I feel left out that there was no poo involved...

undercovamutha · 14/09/2010 19:14

Oh god yes, first poo after birth is definitely the one to worry about .

mazzystartled · 14/09/2010 19:18

I pooed copiously, and cared not a jot
