My friends have only started telling me the full extent of their labours now Im pregnant. And 2 of them crapped... Id heard it before but when my friends gave me sugar coated versions of their labours, I thought, Ah it cant be that common!

So, through the anonymous medium of the internet forum, tell me, how common is this really?! And what can I do to stop it!!!

Honestly don't worry about it. I was vaguely aware of pooing but probably would not have known for sure if not for the midwife fishing it out of the pool with a little net. But I really, really didn't care.

I did meet two women who were very proud of the fact they had not pooed in labour but I just thought it was the oddest thing to care about given the circumstances (and they probably did it anyway without noticing.)

nowherewoman · 13/09/2010 19:48

Well as far as I know I didn't but reading this I'm starting to wonder.....

nickytwotimes · 13/09/2010 19:48

I did it both times.
Never even knew myself.
Couldn't really care less, tbh and neither did the mws!

Don't worry about it and good luck. Smile

I know it's likely I'll be doing it but I also want a water birth so I seriously think there's no way of pretending it didn't happen. I do seriously think the MW's won't care, it's more my OH I'm worried about. I think he may spend a considerable amount of the labour on the floor!

AnyFuleKno · 13/09/2010 19:55

I know I did, as the midwife commented on it (I was not bothered by that point) but my DH has never even mentioned it. He was more shocked by the placenta!

MrClaypole · 13/09/2010 19:55

I didn't!!!!

However, I was a total embarassment in many other ways e.g. timing my contractions wrong and nearly giving birth in the lift, shouting at the midwifes to ignore DP's life threatening diabetic sugarlow and focus on ME, giggling like a teenager when a gorgeous anaethatist walked in, I could go on....

But at least I never shat myself Grin

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 13/09/2010 20:01

Saoirse86 i did the majority of my labouring in the pool and didn't know I'd done several little ones (:o according to DH Blush) until DH told me later. He said that the lovely MW sort of 'shepherded' them down the plug hole! Nice! ha ha ha
But i was off my face on gas and air at the time!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 13/09/2010 20:05

part of our tour of the midwife unit at watford general was the sieve they keep next to the birthing pool for just this reason. everyone gave a kind of nervous giggle.

nowit · 13/09/2010 20:10

2 out of 3, but I will echo what has been said already, you really don't care. MUCH more for DH to deal with Blush

Rockbird · 13/09/2010 20:14

MrClaypole, I bet you did :o

MrClaypole · 13/09/2010 20:17

Oh my God now I've read the whole thread I probably did!!!!!!!!

Although DP still wins the prize of shame for tripping over the bucket holding the placenta and spilling it all over the floor.

Then vomiting.

strawberrycake · 13/09/2010 20:18

um..this has made me think. The midwife kept saying 'push like you're doing a giant poo'.
Then she stopped saying it.
?

rastababi · 13/09/2010 20:31

I did on 1 of my 2 births (waterbirth).

I know now it's the most dire mortifying thing you could possibly think about doing, but it really won't be a big deal when the time comes Smile

My friend had a waterbirth during which she had chronic diarrhea, it got so bad the birth pool became a pool of brown poop. She had to get out and deliver on the bed. No big deal.

Tippychoocks · 13/09/2010 20:36

I did. And I was ten days OD so had just made a veggie bean chilli (super spicy) to try and bring on labour.
But I didn't care, at the time it's the least of your worries. The bearing down pushing is just like pooing, in fact I had a mantra in my head saying doabigpoo, doabigpoo.

And I did Blush

NonnoMum · 13/09/2010 20:37

I might have done.

No idea.

Who cares? But I did push out three gorgeous babies (not all in one do, I hasten to add)

sam26oscar · 13/09/2010 20:38

MrClaypole that is hilarious am still chuckling!!

Honeydragon · 13/09/2010 20:38

I did with dd, was waterbirth. I knew I needed to iyswim to get on with pushing the baby out, but I had my eyes focused on my bump not bum. I think the mw removed most with a tissue.

Dh took great delight in informing my parents

"she was given the best bath of her life .... and she only went and crapped in it"

On retrospect, for me the gross bit was as I had birthed in the water they pulled the plug with me and dd still in and I watched various bits of pieces of what had previously been ... well me float away.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/09/2010 20:41

As a m/w I tell you you probably will.

Lady today was giving birth kneeling on the bed and farted and sprayed me all across my arm. Just missed my face. Shock

My mate was silently wetting herself in the corner!

Lynli · 13/09/2010 20:41

I didn't as far as I know.

Both DDs did. But it was dealt with my MW and they do not know they did.

FrameyMcFrame · 13/09/2010 20:43

everyone does but it's nothing to worry about.

My friend pooed on the floor all the way along the hospital corridoor while she was being moved to a delivery room wearing nothing but a backless hospital gown! Blush

snugglejunkie · 13/09/2010 20:53

I was really worried about this too - however I found early labour made me poo a lot. This was at home, in lovely lovely privacy, on my own toilet.

However, though there was nothing left for the actual delivery, I really really genuinely wouldn't have cared!!

BabyRoosMum · 13/09/2010 21:01

I feel so much better about the "risk" (?? Hmm ) of doing a poo whilst in labour after reading all this....when I first read about it I was 1. Completely mortified at the horror of it and 2. Beginning to regret getting myself into this situation....I don't generally do much talking about poo etc.

But hey-ho, feel happy now and, in fact, will feel left out if I don't- like I haven't had the true experience!
Mammie81 Tea poo made me snort with laughter..... :)

undercovamutha · 13/09/2010 21:07

I was like you OP, moritifed at the very thought.

In the end (just before DD was born) I did a neat little poo (TMI I know) in the birthing pool, which I nonchalantly kind of swished away iirc!!!! I think mw must have fished it out whilst I was otherwise engaged Grin. Not sure if DH noticed, he was too busy looking serious/horrified by the whole thing tbh!

No idea with DS - he nearly arrived in the car on the way to the hospital, so crapping myself was the least of my worries!!!

Justanormalmum · 13/09/2010 21:11

I trained to be a midwife for a year in the 90s and almost every woman I delivered or watched give birth had a bit of a poo. We used huge sanitary pad type sheets to hide the poo in case husband fancied a look at the head end. Don't think chap ever noticed.
