Hi,

I'm 27+5, feel fine, have felt baby this morning but in the middle of the night my belly tightened and a shooting pain went up the right hand side of my belly button to the top of my bump. Now this is my first baby so I have no idea what a contraction feels like but it just seems to have felt like one? It wasn't too painful and haven't had anything since.

anyone any ideas about this?

thanks a mil x

Hi, I started having this Friday before last. Like you, this is my first and I had no idea what a contraction felt like! Have now established that one-off contractions are Braxton Hicks contractions, i.e. false labour. Can be really painful but as long as not having them frequently then it's just your body practising for labour. If you're worried, call your MW. We ended up going to labour suite as I was finding them so painful, MWs did heartbeat check and everything was fine and NO-ONE said "don't be silly" etc etc. Better to be sure that everything's okay. Also, apparently BH can often start at around 28 weeks.
Hope you're feeling okay now.

Wow thanks so much for your post, it's great to hear of someone else having something similar!

I've only had the one and nothing since then, but definitely if I feel anything else I'll be on to my MW straight away.

It's a bit crazy that they can start so early though isn't it. Might do a bit of reading into all this now

It really freaked me out at first - the MW was saying on the phone: Do you think it's Braxton Hicks? Me: I DON'T KNOW, I'VE NEVER FELT THEM BEFORE! etc etc Blush

yeh that's exactly my problem too! how are we meant to know what they feel like!!
