Hi,

I have been told by my midwife to make a decision as to whether I want my baby to have the vitamin k injection, I have been reading up on internet about the pros and cons but seem to be reading conflicting advice. Does anyone have any information on the pros and cons of a newborn having the injection?

Many Thanks

I've read into this too and this seems a good website for info:

www.womens-health.co.uk/vitk.asp

Its made me decide that the disadvantages are not a significant factor and I will be going for it.

I looked at the abstracts of the relevant research for my DSiL when she was pregnant last year - as Elsa123's link says, there was a fairly small scale study (around 700 people) that linked vitamin K with leukemia, and then no subsequent studies confirmed the link. Some of these subsequent studies were on a huge scale (up to a million, I think), so you'd expect them to find a link if there is one. This suggests that the link with leukemia is not / no longer valid, and it's very much advisable for your baby to have the Vitamin K.

IIRC, it has been suggested that there was something specific about how vitamin K was administered in some cases in the 80s which might explain the leukemia link.
