i was told in the hosp to not get pregnant for 12 months.
ended up having an emergency cs and am guessing the advice was related to this.. but i was not in a questioning frame of mind at that point!
has anyone fallen pregnant within a year post cs?
any thoughts?
am wondering if i should use other contraception and not count on EBF. would it be disastrous to conceive???

You shouldn't count on EBF!

How old is your DC?

I concieved 13 months after an em cs and it was all ok.

I had my DD by em cs (severe hemorrhage) & no one told me not to get pregnant within a certain amount of time.

I got pregnant again 4 months later & theres 11 months & two weeks betweem them.

No major problems with the next pregnancy apart from early bleeding in the pregnancy.

Then fell pregnant with the next one 8 months later.

Again no one said anything about it being safe or unsafe to conceive so soon.

I felt well & had healed up well with each c-section. Maybe if you're unsure you could ask to speak to your consultant about ttc again.

Thre are 15 months between mine (both ELCS). Was never told it could be a problem.

hmmm, interesting... i wonder if there was another reason she said it!
might have a word with gp and see if she can find out..
the thought of going back to the hosp to ask myself makes me panic! place gave some stupid care!

don't know what DC and DD are (which is boy / girl??)
but anyway, my daughter is almost 11weeks old.

17 months between mine, was never told to avoid conceiving within the year, got shouted at by midwife for having conceived within year at my booking in appointment, no other problems and had successful VBAC.

BellaEmbergsLovechild · 11/09/2010 19:55

My sister had her second (also by cs) 12 months and 5 days after her first - she was fine.

I think the advice is there as a guide, to let your body and internal stiches heal up.

Tootlesmummy · 11/09/2010 19:57

it's to allow time for the muscles etc to heal as there is a danger that they can split if you get pregnant quickly. It's not a 'it will happen' just 'it could happen'.

I think it used to be thought that it was more risky to get pg within a year of a cs and that it would mean an automatic section the second time.

Info on this website suggests that the risks are greater if you get pregnant sooner, but that they are pretty small anyway.

You should use contraception if you're not sure you're ready for number 2. I think one of the doctors in the hospital claimed EBF was about 80%-90% reliable. Which, turned around, could be quite a failure rate!

thank you all!
sounds like getting pregnant sooner than a year from the birth would not be a definite physical disaster... far from it!
