An awful thing to say but my baby scan pic is really ugly! Am quite worried

The 20 week scan pic has my baby in profile and it's not attractive. The lips are very prominent so much so I thought the top lip was the nose, and the nose is just a lump squished on, and a massive one at that. I know all baby scan pics look weird and I know hormones means I will think it is the most beautiful baby in the world anyway, but I am genuinely a bit worried about it. Anyone else have this?

at my 20 week scan DH commented that the baby looked evil and the sonographer sniggered Grin

Mahraih · 10/09/2010 10:18

Mine looked horrid - the doctor got quite iritated and told me that, 'they all looked like that' in the womb.

Like the face of death - skull, fangy bits, etc, full frontal face shot. We didn't get a picture.

But once it gets to a stage when it isn't a) pickled in your womb and b) squished up and c) isn't still gestating, it will look like a normal baby.

barrystea · 10/09/2010 10:19

My baby had these incredibly prominent Mick jagger lips going on - and is probably the most beautiful child I have ever seen with perfect gorgeous rosebud lips. All will be well!

mrsruffallo · 10/09/2010 10:20

It doesn't really matter does it?

IMO 2D scans always make the baby look like litle aliens :o but don't worry once your baby is born he/she will be the most gorgeous baby in the world.

I'm pregnant with DC3 and we've just had 4D scan - was fab to see our gorgeous little boy in more detail but when I showed my mother the pics/DVD her only comment was 'what an ugly baby' Angry

I have a feeling she'll change her mind when little tyke is here :o

weegiemum · 10/09/2010 10:24

After my first scan with ds I was sure he would burst through my chest like in Alien. Despite having already given birth!

He's gorgeous now (though he's 8. No scan can show you the potential for persistent toilet humour).

HeadingHome · 10/09/2010 10:24

I had a dream last night that the baby was handed to me and I started crying my eyes out.

When they asked me what was wrong I wailed "it looks like DH!"

DH didn't think that was a funny dream.

When everyone asked what I hope for (boy or girl) I say "I don't care - as long as it's attractive".

PipPipPip · 10/09/2010 10:26

When people look at a scan and say "oh wow, how wonderful" or "how cute" they're just being polite/lying.

All babies in scans look like prawns/cockroaches/aliens.

Don't worry about it :)

hoolabombshell · 10/09/2010 10:28

Clarasmummy your sonographer "the baby looked creepy"?? Are you serious?!

Sorry but I don't understand how anyone would think a scan produces a photographic likeness of what the baby is going to actually look like outside the womb? Allowing for angles, movement etc. surely you wouldn't think one black and white fuzzy picture represents once and for all what the baby will look like? Hmm

No matter what my 20 week scan looks like (and allowing for the variables above) I will be happy just to hear the baby is in good health.

I'm sure your baby will be beautiful 'penguindays'.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/09/2010 10:29

LMAO at all the demon foetuses. DS's scan pictures were terrifying. Like this . Or this

But when he was born 20 weeks later - my goodness he was beautiful. I mean breathtakingly so.

Worry not, penguin.

StripeyMoon · 10/09/2010 10:30

MY DS looked like Skeletor in his scan. I was quite scared until he was born.

hoolabombshell · 10/09/2010 10:32

lol at your pics JMHPG

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/09/2010 10:32

Grin @ HeadingHome.

AliGrylls · 10/09/2010 10:33

Agreed Pippip - someone told me that my scan looked like a kitten.

cazzybabs · 10/09/2010 10:34

I thought dd2 was the most beautiful baby when she was born... now was I look back my god she was ugly...sadly dd4 looks like her so now when everyone looks into the pram and says what a lovely baby I have to bite my lip to stop my going "no..she is ugly".

MarineIguana · 10/09/2010 10:37

DD looked like a strange little old man on hers. I was worried actually because DS's one 5 years previously looked like a perfect cherub. But.... DD came out looking exactly like DS. You can't tell much from the scan.

dinkystinky · 10/09/2010 10:38

DS1 and DS2 looked like squashed frogs in their 20 week scans - both lovely looking boys when they came out...

kveta · 10/09/2010 10:41

DS looked like an alien on his 20 week scan. Even the sonographer said it was a wee bit creepy, when DH and I were both going 'yikes!'. then I had a scan at 38 weeks, and the sonographer said 'ooh, his head is ENORMOUS' but at least he looked like a proper baby.

His head was (and still is) enormous, but god he's gorgeous (pics on profile for you to disagree ogling purposes). and once born he looked just like his 38 week scan - nothing like the 20 week one!

mamaloco · 10/09/2010 10:44

Grin Glad it is not just me. I thaught DD1 was ugly, never told anybody except DH. I was used to see my baby pictures, very cute baby if I may say so. No picture of my brother (DM said because he was too ugly Confused), so quite a shock! She is now gorgeous.
I still have problems saying "oooh what a gorgeous baby" to freinds' newborns, I can't see it. They are much better after 3 months. (the 4th trimester?)

toodles · 10/09/2010 10:50

kveta - that is one beautiful baby you have there. I agree he is really gorgeous.

toastandslippers · 10/09/2010 10:52

What terrific news, penguindays, that you've been given the all clear on your 20 week scan. You're half way there and you can relax now and 'enjoy the ride' for the next few months. My son's scan at this stage also looked AWFUL. He was really ugly in it - lips and nose all mis-shapen, odd looking head. When I showed the pic to people I felt too nervous and embarrassed to even apologise about it - thinking I just couldn't even utter my fears.....(so brave you, daring to voice your's - that's the joy of mumsnet). Nor was it helped that a friend's scan actually looked like a normal baby! DS is now fantastic 6ft 3" 14 year old and (self-conscious cough) friends tell me he is gorgeous. He was a lovely smiley baby and toddler too. NOTHING LIKE the peculiar scan image.... Please don't worry.

EleFunTess · 10/09/2010 10:52

babies look nothing like their 20 week scan when they are born, I assure you. Even those swanky 3D/4D late scans aren't really a good indicator, as they show your baby 'underwater'.

penguindays · 10/09/2010 10:56

Aw thank you all.

Of course it doesn't matter mrsruffallo and of course a healthy baby is the most important thing, but good to know not just me with an ugly scan pic - nice to be reassured it will look like a normal baby after all (probably!). Everyone had been asking to see the pic and I said we didn't get one because I didn't want their comments.

Ha - mine looked like a zombie! Especially where she's facing the camera! Sent PIL the one where she's facing up - much less scary.
