Godparents - who and how many?

How many godparents do you have for your DC and who - family/ good friend/ someone with similar parenting style to you??
Also when did you ask them - when pregnant or when DC arrived?

ds has 2: dh's brother and my niece. They are both childless and unattached. We asked them during the pregnancy.

My DSs each have 3 - they are close friends. Asked them after the birth in each case. Did consider using family members also, but then decided against it - not sure why, just ended up feeling more comfortable with the idea of close friends as godparents.

Was led to believe that is traditional for a girl to have two godmothers and a godfather and for a boy to have two godfathers and a godmother.

We chose long-term friends who, to the best of our knowledge, we want to stay friends with for the rest of our lives and who we hope will be interested (enough) in their godchildren.

We asked them once the DC were born - gave us plenty of opportunity to be sure about the people we were asking and also because we wanted the babies safely born/out before we asked anyone for that kind of commitment/attachment.
