Okay, so I realise that there won't be a miracle treatment out there but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good oil/lotion. How early on pregnancy did you start prevention!?

Unfortunately I think a lot of it is down to genetics. I used Bio Oil and that expensive Clinique stuff (someone else bought me) from the 1st trimester and only got 2 small ones in late late pregnancy. And i was HUGE!

Maybe someone else will have more wisdom...

I used bio oil religiously from the first few weeks and I'm still covered in stretch marks. Sorry but I do think it's genetic.

VirginOnTheRidiculous · 07/09/2010 21:50

It is genetic. The bit of the skin that tears isn't anything that any lotion or potion reaches. You will get them or you won't. But you can keep you skin lovely and soft and avoid the itchiness with creams and the good news is that they do fade eventually.

And in vain hope, I slathered myself in oil from the point of conception. I am a walking stretchmark with eyes and a mouth.

agree genetics. i have none. no idea why. first time nothing. second bio oil. don't think it makes a difference to be honest.

I am using Burt Bees Mama Bee oil twice a day, nothing yet but I don't think it's a miracle worker or anything but it can't hurt to try.

I am also eating almonds and brazil nuts as they contain vitamin E but again I think it might be futile!

Worth a try though.

The Sanctuary also do a stretch mark oil that you can get in Boots and I have that on standby for when the Burt Bees runs out.

I used bio oil from about 8 weeks every bloody day and I am still covered!
I stopped at about 30 ish weeks as it rather expensive and Im planning to take it up again after baby arrives in hope it will help them fade!

the only cream which is clinically proven to reduce to likelihood of developing stretch marks in pregnancy is trofolastin cream which can be purchased fro the pharmamundi website.

there is however a large genetic component, but using the cream will mean you are less likely to get stretch marks.

lolabanola · 08/09/2010 07:51

It's all down to genetics as others have said ... all of the expensive cream in the world wont work, if you are going to get them then you will get them! Stretch marks appear below your first layers of skin so cream can't penetrate the area anyway.

Someone said on here a few weeks ago that if you had them as a growing teenager then you are prone to get them and will more than likely get them in pregnancy.

I am religiously checking to make sure that none have appeared on me! Even if I see a little mark I go into panic mode thinking that it might be a stretch mark!!

Giddyup · 08/09/2010 08:21

I think it's a bit of both, I religiously kept my bump greased up. last time I used the Body Shop cocoa butter stick and ended up with stretch marks on my boobs and thighs but not one on my bump. I also had them when I was a teenager.

I have been a bit lazier this time but am still greasing myself up when I remember, have been using a combination of The Body Shop thing again but I don't think its as good nowadays and whatever heavy duty body lotion I have. Am 32 weeks and very big and I have non yet, but need to step up the oiling.

Emsyboo · 08/09/2010 10:30

I started oiling from the second trimester twice a day with bio oil, use baby oil after a swim and cocoa butter or babylotion (or whatever is left over from some christmas or birthday gift sometimes end up very sparkly)

So far no stretch marks but agree it is genetic and my mum doesn't have any. However I do have stretch marks on my legs from previous weight gain so think the extra moisture is helping and can't do any harm.

My DH oils the bump everynight and helps him bond with the bump :) Goodluck ladies

Despite a whole industry being dedicated to the contrary, there is not much you can do about whether you're going to get stretch marks. It's in the genes.

I was fine until about 32 weeks and then they appeared on my stomach overnight. I keep moisturised but accept that there is little I can do and that they will fade . . . hopefully . . .

AlexMi · 08/09/2010 12:22

I've been using Mama Mio oil - 34 weeks and not a stretch mark in sight. I do think it's luck and genetics but I hear that keeping the skin supple will help to minimise marks and will also help them to fade......but then you do hear lots of rubbish.....
