Hello all

I am 26+3 and midwife said to count 10 movements in 12 hours, is that 10 periods of activity or just 10 single movements?

Also she said baby should be getting into a pattern... well there is no pattern at all!

How do I know if she is moving enough etc my friend said she felt the baby doing somersaults at my stage i havent?!

I keep getting worked up about it

Thanks x

I've been told to count 10 kicks in 10 hours, but only after 28 weeks - though it's good to try and get in the habit now.

it depends on the mw really. mine said 10 kicks in 10 hours but was told yest by dif mw 10 in 12 hours.

and fwiw when i had my ds he had no pattern atall, and when he did move he just kicked.

dd1 and the one i'm having now likes to do some really interesting somersaults. and you can almost set your watch by her movements.

I thought the same at the same stage as you and now (34+5) I have a definite pattern. No movement all night apart from the odd shuffle, it wakes up when the alarm goes off at 0600, then nothing until 1000, then movement pretty much all day until 2200 then sleep.

At your stage just detecting movements is enough. If you're at work for example, just scribble a tick or cross on a notepad when you feel something and before you know it, you'll have 10 movements. Go for 10 in the day, although you'll probably feel far more.

My midwife said it was a bit early for me to worry about movement patterns, i'm 25 weeks but there are definite patterns forming already for mine but i think it depends on the baby. My friends baby didn't have a pattern and she was told (after 32 weeks) to keep an eye for at least 10 kicks a day.

Elsa123 sounds like your baby is going to be a dream when it arrives. I'm really worried about mine as she seems to like doing somersaults at around 3 in the morning which wake me up - not loving her patterns so far!!

35 weeks and a pattern has never emerged. I would say a movement could be just 1 kick or a collection of kicks if there is no real space inbetween. You wouldn't be getting a very accurate picture if the baby kicked 10 times in 20 mins and you counted that as your 10 movements IYSWIM

I have downloaded a sheet to record movements off the count the kicks campaign website.

Make sure you're having fairly regular movements but don't worry about the patterns. I'm 37+4 and she's never got into a pattern. Possibly because I don't have a very regular routine as I work part time. I've definitely noticed that she goes extremely quiet when there are new voices or lots of noise around me. My sister, who's 38+3, also has the same thing with her baby. We think they're going to be shy girls!

Am 28+5 and having antenatal checks with GP rather than midwife at this stage. Have not been told about 'counting' movements. To be honest, I just keep track subconsciously - I mean, I get movements throughout the day interspersed with quieter periods. I don't keep count.
