No more 12 week book in and scan appointments?

My last 3 pregnancies I had my book in appointment with my 12 week scan.

This time I've been called in for a book in appointment at 7 weeks and will sort scan then for 12 weeks.

Seems a bit pointless to me - do they want to take bloods earlier now or something?

thats the way it has always been here. book in about 8-10 weeks then appt for scan is booked during that appt. no bloods taken until the scan date.

Ah right,

I've always had book in and scan. Bit of a PITA going on bus to hospital to get weighed Grin

Now that nuchal scans are more widely available, there's a need to get people in to the system - or they could miss the "window" which is 11 to 13 weeks, the move is towards earlier booking to allow people the choice of having these tests.

Also (as a 12 week B-I patient both times) it would be nice to see someone sooner and feel "registered" in the system.

mum2oneloudbaby · 06/09/2010 14:36

always been that way here too. Plus they do bloods at book-in and at 12 week scan for different reasons obviously.

we have booking in appt at home. wouldn't be happy at trekking all the way to the hospital for a chat and some form filling!

PussinJimmyChoos · 06/09/2010 15:14

I think the whole system is a bit ancient tbh...saw Dr as soon as found out was preg and assumed it would cross reference with midwife as they are all in the same surgery

Didn't hear anything so rang them up and they said I couldn't do a booking appt over the phone, needed to come in person as there were 'lots of forms to fill in'..I trek down to the surgery, green with preg sickness to find that there is ONE farking form that took less than 2mins to fill in.

Was then informed midwife had no appts until end of Sept (am 11 weeks this week!) but she could take my number and would let me know any slots she has free before that...this was last week and am still waiting Hmm

Have started the ball rolling for a private Nuchal/dating scan as cannot be arsed to wait around for midwife to get her sodding act together!!

Didn't know you wre PG pussin, congrats Grin

Thats the thing, it will be a 45 min bus ride there and back, inbetween school drop off/ pick up, with 20 month old DD in tow, to fill in a form and be told I'm fat Grin

Not my idea of a good day!

My MW came to my house to book me in at about 10-11 weeks. She phoned hosp then to get the scan appt for between 12 and 13 weeks. My community MW doesnt do any clinics at hospital, the hospital MWs dont do any community work. They are totally separate in that regard.

PussinJimmyChoos · 06/09/2010 16:42

Thanks TO Smile

Have just booked Nuchal test with Bupa/Spire....£199!!! they said they will do bloods as well and I was like can't you just do the scan ....obv they thought I was tight Grin but apparently have to have bloods as well as scan to get full pic etc....

Also chased midwife but can't rely on her to get scans sorted in time. Feel a bit bad as appt is a Friday afternoon after DS's first week at school but they didn't have any in the day so will have to take him with me but then maybe be good for him to see baby on screen??

clarebear1 · 07/09/2010 12:42

My book in apps at 12 weeks and scan 6 days later. I thought this was quite late but people have said not.

PinkElephant73 · 07/09/2010 18:01

*PussinJimmyChoos" that is hopeless! Why on earth did your GP not tell you to make a booking appt with the midwife! You should not have to pay £200 for a private scan to ensure that you get one in time to do the nuchal test.

In your shoes I would contact the hospital antenatal clinic directly (go through the switchboard if need be) and explain the urgency of the situtation re scan dates and that the community midwife is not returning calls. Maybe they will be able to put a boot up her backside or refer you directly for a scan? Personally I would want to hang on to my £200 if at all possible

PussinJimmyChoos · 07/09/2010 18:08

Midwife got back to me and have booking appt next week but she didn't say anything about scans...mmm...

When I had DS, they didn't offer nuchal tests...had to have it done privately. Only thing they did was the bloods at 5 months to test for Downs etc

Has it changed now?

oggybags · 07/09/2010 18:12

My booking in was 9 weeks, bloods at 10....but i cant have my scan until 15!!!
ive paid £50 for a private one and im rwally pleased i did
ive tried to bring it forwards but they wont :-( due to capacity... apparently its a baby boom
