Expectations at 9 week scan?

I've got an early scan booked for tomorrow and I'll be 9+0.. I just wondered about a couple of things..

Is it likely to be a vaginal scan at this stage? I'm a bit overweight so have more tummy fat to see through!

Also, am I right to think that at 9 weeks I could expect to see the heartbeat if there is one? i.e. unlike at say 6 weeks, if there's no heartbeat that's bad news rather than inconclusive?

Thanks for your help :)

It might very well be an internal one but I have had both types at this stage.

At 9 weeks there should be a heartbeat I beleive.

Is it a private clinic? Not all of them have the kit to do vaginal scans - the one I went to at 9 weeks didn't but it wasn't an issue.

Yes, you should see a heartbeat at this stage.

excitedmummy2be · 02/09/2010 22:29

If you're Nhs they may do vaginal scan but private have slightly better machines so would be abdominal. You will def see a heart beat and again, if private, you will hear it too!! You can see baby as well but doesn't look that much like a baby at that point! I've had private scans at 7/8/9/10/11/12 weeks (don't ask!!!!) and the change every week is amazing! If I remember, at 9 weeks you may well see your little one moving around a bit too.... But don't quote me on that. Enjoy!

Haliborange · 02/09/2010 22:31

I've only ever had internal scans before 12 weeks. It's really nothing to worry about though.
Yes, there should be a hb at nine weeks.
Good luck!

lucielooo · 02/09/2010 22:32

Sorry I should have mentioned, it's private at local Babybond.. I'm pretty sure they have facility to do both? Just wondering at what sort of point they start to be able to see abdominally.

Also do I need to drink lots of water? Anything else I should know? never had a scan before!

Excitedmummy2be you really must be the expert!!

I had one at 9 weeks- not internal. Heartbeat, definite bean/baby with limb buds and ours was moving around a little bit :)

Hope your scan goes well.

sparklyrainbow · 02/09/2010 22:39

Oh, mine was babybond too and yes, drink lots of water!

excitedmummy2be · 02/09/2010 22:43

You will need a full bladder in afraid... But private are pretty good and I was always seen on time so no need to wait round needing a wee! I am indeed an expert!! I bled every week from 7 weeks til 12 weeks and Nhs emergency scans take 2 weeks!! So we paid every time and got a scan either same day or next. Can't say enough about the private scans... Brilliant. It's a bit soon to tell if anything is wrong with the babys organs and still very small and developing but they can tell you if the pregnancy appears to be progressing normally ie placenta forming well, baby the right size, heartbeat good. Good luck :)

Sorry to hear it was such a nightmare for you excitedmummy must have been a very stressful 5 weeks - hope all is well now :)

At this point, I would just like to know if anything is happening in there.. I felt like my symptoms dropped off at week seven so I know it provides no guarantees but just want to see if at this point at least, things are ok. Fingers crossed!

Everythings great lucielooo I'm now 31 weeks and expecting a little girl! Terribly excited! Preg symptoms do come and go, so try not to worry about that. Rest assured that if all is ok, I was told at 9 weeks that it's a good chance everything will be fine. Thisis because most women MC because something goes wrong with babys development, by 9 weeks baby has developed all it's major organs.... They just need to obviously grow and develop but they are all there meaning the chance of MC reduces massively. Good luck... Won't be long til you're suffering from terrible insomnia in your third tri too and Reading thru MN at 0415am too!! X

lucielooo · 03/09/2010 13:17

Well I had the scan this morning and everything is fine :) Saw and heard little babies heart beat. Sobbed all the way through (obviously!) So relieved. I know it doesn't mean everything will definitely be ok, but it is good to know that at least there's something happening in there.

Thanks for all you replies :)

Congratulations! That's great news. I'm so pleased for you. It's an amazing feeling seeing your little baby for the first time. 9 weeks is a real milestone... Hope the rest of your pregnancy is plain sailing x

miamix · 03/09/2010 14:36

I had an internal scan at 8+4 and saw the hb. Hope it all goes well!

miamix · 03/09/2010 14:37

Oops just saw you'd already been.

Congratulations!

"it is good to know that at least there's something happening in there"

This is exactly why I paid for an early scan... it's hell on the nerves, the first 12 weeks especially!

Congrats again :)

lucielooo · 03/09/2010 16:43

Thanks miamix :) It's definitely worth it if you have the option, worth every penny to see that little heart beat :)

Even if it had been bad news at least I would have known. There's a long time getting to 12 weeks!
