Spotting at 6 Weeks - How worried should I be?

Hi,

I'm around 5-6 weeks along, and have had some dark brown spotting. The first occurrence was on Tuesday night, and then nothing more until just now (Thursday night). It's not much - only a few drops - but I'm really worried.

I took a long flight on Tuesday and lifted a suitcase I probably shouldn't have, which may have caused a problem (?).

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of spotting? Should I be calling the midwife, or am I overreacting? It's my first pregnancy and I'm a bit scared!

Thanks!

I would phone your GP and make an appointment to check. Spotting can be normal but you must get checked out. Your GP should refer you for an early scan.

I had spotting at week 9 ish and was fine at the end (I am now week 17). I find resting a lot and sleeping a lot seems to have help making it go away (or was it just coincidence?). I happened to have the week off shortly after this happened and I spent most of the week just sleeping and the problem just went away.

I told the GP and she suggested an earlier scan, but nothing happened at the end and I got my normal scan at 11th week, by then the problem has gone away. I am under the impression that nhs really doesn't care about this if it happens during 1st trimester. :(

Oh and I fully understand how scary it can be and I remember crying myself to sleep and thought I was loosing my baby. But then I think trying to stay calm and stress free may have helped. My DH suspect that the spotting could have been stress induced but we don't know...

I had 1st trimester bleeding with both my pregnancies (first resulting in my beautiful DD and am currently in the 30th week of my second). I got it checked out each time and was reassured by the scans, although I did have the first scan this time around at 6 weeks and it was too early, so ideally wait until 7 weeks. Do you have an Early Pregnancy Unit at your local hospital? The one I went to was very good.

Try not to worry, although I know how hard it is not to. Spotting at this stage is very common. Good luck with everything.

I had some red fresh blood spotting at 6 weeks and was terrified I was losing my baby. I phoned Nhs direct first cos it was about 1am when I noticed it. They were very good at reassuring me. They said that if I had no pain or serious discomfort then its likely I would be fine. I phoned my ante natal clinic next morning and they sent me to the early pregnancy unit for a scan. I was still very worried but on the scan saw baby's heartbeat (at which point I cried Smile) and was told by the midwife that light bleeding early on is quite common and many pregnant women experience it.

Good luck, keep us posted, thinking of you x

I had the same and panicked... turned out I wasn't quite as far along as I thought and it was implantation bleeding.

Come to think of it I had a few occurences of brown spotting in the first 8 weeks, but I'm now almost 20 weeks, so try not to worry too much, it is more than likely nothing. Rest helped - don't rush around too much, the early days of pregnancy are quite taxing on your body methinks!

To be honest I would avoid early scans if possible (if you were considering getting checked out for this bleed). I went for one at 4+5 (I thought I was 5-6 weeks at the time) because of the spotting and they only saw the sac, no hb (too early) and all it did was make me worry that the pregnancy wouldn't progress. Two scans later and they finally found a heartbeat but it was so stressful in the time between scans. Obviously I don't know your history but this is just my experience.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope all goes smoothly for you x
