Anyone pregnant and had LED treatment in the past

Hi
I'm 29 weeks pregnant with my first - very excited about it.
In Dec 2008 I had abnormal smear cells and had LED treatment to remove them. I was told it was relatively low risk, but as it wasn't shifting I had to get it removed. Then I had infection and was treated again.

When I had this treatment done the doctor said that some people who had the treatment may have the baby slightly earlier than their due date - at that time I thought it wasn't a problem...but when I found out I was pregnant my midwife booked an appointment with a doctor to double check.

Just came back from doctor's appointment and he said I'd need to get a scan to see my cervix's situation. He did say if I only had one treatment it may be okay but it is true that some people who had the treatment have gone on to have premature baby OR totally opposite and when in labour their cervix won't open up and need to get c-section OR some people will have normal birth...(!?!)

I'm freaking out as I don't want any two extreme cases but normal birth...

Anyone had LED treatment in the past and have given birth what was your experience?

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had LED treatment several years before having my DD. They did scan my cervix once, I think, while I was pregnant but it was never considered a problem. I went into labour just one week early, which I doubt very much was anything to do with the treatment. Can't comment re. the cervix opening/not opening though as DD was breach so I had a c-section anyway (labour started a few hours before the elective time!).

Now pregnant with my second, just a week behind you actually, and the midwife was not in the least bit concerned about my previous LED treatment.

Good luck with everything.

Hi - I am in a very similar situation - I have cone biopsy and loop ex. about 8 years ago and have had a couple of smaller biopsies since - inc after infections etc. Now 22 wks preg. and have spent a lot of time worrying about cervical incompetence and cervical stenosis which is the two extremes of cervix opening too soon or not opening at all.

I brought this up at my booking in appointment and have since seen my consultant who did not seem too concerned about cervical incompetence as, like you, I have only had one LED procedure and incompetence is more likely to result after several ops or multiple incidents of precancer or cancer.

I have another consultant appointment booked for 33 weeks to check me out for stenosis and I have been told I can not give birth at the midwife-led centre and have to go to the hospital instead because of this.

If you tell your mw about this she should be able to book you in to see your consultant who did the LED. Good luck - it is scary x

I don't know what LED is but I have had LLETZ three times for CIN 3.

With each of my 3 labours I have dilated very slowly. I had my booking appt with mw this week (am 15/40) and I asked her if she thought the scarring on my cervix could be hindering my dilatation. She thought it could be.

So that's my experience! I hope your works out well!

I had a loop excision before having DD, had my cervix measured, and it was shorter than normal but they weren't concerned, then had my cervix felt at 27 weeks or softening, and was softer than they had hoped, so was given steroids for the babies lungs.
Went into labour 6 days early, and my labour lasted 2 hours an 5minutes. Don't know if I was destined to have a quick birth or it was anything to do with the loop.
Pregnant again, and they have told me my cervix has proved it isn't incompetent by going full term last time, so no monitoring at all this time round.

Also had swabs done at 27 weeks as was told any procedure on cervix can cause infection, mine swabs only showed thrush.

Thanks for your comments - it sounds like all unpredictable...I guess I need to wait for my cervix scan and take it from there. God knows when that will be tho. I bet by the time I get one it'll be too late to do any internal scan anyway! I also heard its not recommended to do internal scan anyway??

due1111 - I can't make an appointment with a consultant who performed LED as I moved and its 4hrs away! My GP should have all the information...
