Okay to paint nursery furniture?

We're considering getting the nursery furniture - cot, dresser, etc - second hand. Is it considered okay to paint nursery furniture and, if so, do I need to look out for specifics with the paint?

Most are quite safe now, though you can check the back and it'll normally say if it's safe for kids. I used Homebase satinwood on the cot, and it said it was safe.
