Did anyone go into labour with no warning at all?

Just wondering. 37+2 with DC4: went in for monitoring last night due to reduced movements (again) and possible unstable lie.
Baby is fine and very much in pelvis: 3/5 in there.

The pressure in my pelvis has been quite full on for a couple of days.

The MW and consultant both commented that it looks like I could go into labour any day now. Aaaggghhhh.

Other than pressure on and off,the only signs I am getting are that I just feel odd and have butterflies: I think maybe that their comments have added to this, but I was feeling this way before going in yesterday.

Has anybody really just gone bam, straight into labour, that's it, no warning?

(that would suit me fine BTW: not enough time to flap and due to HB again anyway!)

I did, but not until almost 42 weeks. Didn't have a single BH, no twinges, nothing, then went into pretty much full blown labour at 11am, DS out by 7:30pm.

Obviously I knew it had to be soon, on account of being so overdue, but I literally had not an inkling apart from getting a stomach ache at around 8am on the day I gave birth.

My friend did. She went to the cinema to watch The Descent. She blames this for bringing on early labour. Her friend dropped her off at home and literally minutes after he left she was on the phone to 999 for an ambulance.

When she got to hospital they told her she wasn't in labour, and was just being dramatic about the pain , but agreed to call her mum anyway as she was in so much pain. Her baby was born while they were on the phone to her mum

Luckily both mum and baby are fine. She decided not to put in a complaint.

I went into labour at 39+2, my waters broke while I was getting ready to go out to the park. I really thought he'd be a week late because it was my first! It was also totally unexpected because my bump hadn't "dropped" at all and he hadn't engaged. In fact he didn't ever engage so had EMCS.

I had really bad thigh cramps for a week or so beforehand, but I thought that was because i'd been so lazy during pregnancy, lol, but they went away as soon as he was born so looking back must have been a warning sign.

my SIL went to 42 weeks and was told it could be "any day" for weeks beforehand!

With DD2 I was woken up by a fairly violent contraction at 4am, and it was pretty full on then until DD was born at 6.15 (so from start to finish just over two hours). There was no warning before that first contraction, but I was full term so it wasn't too surprising. We just had time to phone the midwife, drop DD1 off at friends and get to the birth centre before I started pushing.

I have a friend who has very quick labours, some of her DCs born at home, so I'd guess you say she had no warning.

My first DC was born at 41+6 and labour started by the waters breaking suddenly, had first contraction about ten minutes afterwards. He wasn't engaged - not sure he ever did, had a C-section in the end like RonansMummy's story - so I didn't get the pressure or anything in the weeks beforehand. But I am not sure that's the sort of answer you were looking for . . . SOMETHING had to bloody well happen eventually.

YES!

Ds1 was born at 41+3 so midwife was sure i would be overdue with second ds also.

Not so- at 38+4 i was getting out of bed for a middle of the night toilet trip and GUSH! my waters went. He wasn't engaged (hence the big gush as no head 'plugging it' and not even had my show till in labour. He was born at home (planned) 4 hours later.

Yup, at 38 weeks. Was eating dinner and my waters went with a gush and then started contracting immediately.

Not me I have long drawn out labours but my sister at 37 weeks called the midwife because she felt odd.
Midwife came checked her over said she was fine and left.
Twenty minutes later she called 999 because she knew birth was imminent.
Paramedics stretchered her to ambulance believing she was over reacting because she had no obvious pain.
Dn was born in back of ambulance in the road in front of her house before the doors had been secured.
He weighed 9lb 13oz and sister was taken to maternity because of shock more than anything else.

Both times I did, ds1 no BH, none of the things everyone tells you are impending signs of labour. Not even any pain when the contractions did come! I was told a few times that I wasn't in labour, even when my waters broke over the mw she still wasn't concerned until she realised I was 9cm dilated! He hadn't engaged, and they'd even booked me in for an induction/cs at 40+3. 8hrs from 1st twinge, thank god I didn't go that far.

ds2 was 8 days o/d but had had no feelings of impending labour, really thought I was going to be needing an induction, had a sweep, nothing, went to bed, then woke at 1:45 with a contraction, he was born at 3.30. Waters never broke at all with him.

Fingers crossed this one I'm due with in Dec is just as easy!

Not really though it was pretty quick. My mum said when she went into labour she said she just woke up feeling 'under the weather', couldn't really explain it.

I felt the same, woke up feeling 'under the weather' went into labour at 11am, DD born at 5pm.

Much the same as Bumper woke at normal time , had breakfast said to DH " will you stay for a little while as I feel a bit strange " Had an enormous contraction and DS arrived 2 hours later. ( underwear cut off as I arrived in hospital and delivered.) DD was nearly born on toilet just after I was told "Well baby will be with us by midnight" 6 hours away !! Funnily enough DD2 was a bit slower. DH says the midwives should wear catcher's mitts like baseball players. He always laughs at slow births easing the baby out.

My waters broke, when I was doing the ironing. I was 33 weeks pregnant. DD was born 48 hours later after being speeded up with drip. She weighed 7lbs 40z and was 27 inches long. She took a long time because her shoulders got stuck.

My DF delivered me. My DM said I think the baby is coming had one contraction and there I was.

DS2 was induced, but with both DS1 and DD I went to bed and was then woken by contractions. Never had Braxton Hicks or any sign that labour was imminent until it actually started (waters didn't even break with DS1!)

With my 3rd DC I'd had a sweep on my due date, I just had tightenings through the day like Id been having for a few weeks.

About 10pm in the evening my water broke when I was sat on the sofa!

Got to the hospital to be told I was only 2cm's and may be able to go home.

Ds2 was born 3 hours later weighing 10lb 10oz!

I had a surprise labour with dd at 40+4. No warnings at all apart from a mega burst of energy in the afternoon, went to bed and woke at 2am feeling "odd" so phoned the hosp, went in and got sent home. Had a huge contraction on arriving home so straight back to hosp and dd was crowning! I was a bit as were the hosp mw's!

I hadn't had any BH, twinges or anything before i went into labour. Had been worried i wouldn't know when i was in labour as i'd no BH to compare it to (and my sil had been to hospital twice with just BH so i thought they must be pretty bad - and then labour loads worse!) but i knew that it was the real thing when i happened.

With my dd i was 39+5, had been having a totally normal day and at about 5pm felt period type pains. They got stronger over the evening and then gradually became contractions. Dd was born at 3pm the next day.

With ds it was much the same story although i was 5 days over and had felt that labour had wanted to get started a few times but nothing came of it - no particular pains: just a feeling Labour again began with the same period pains and just built up (started at 5pm again although he was born at 11.30am the next morning :o ) When they examined me though they said my cervix was slightly tilted and that ds's head wasn't pressing squarely on it so that possibly explained the feeling that labour had wanted to start but things weren't quite in the right place! Maybe. :o

My waters didn't break either time too. Ds was actually born with the sac still intact - and he was born underwater - freaky!

I did with DD, I was 39 weeks.
I had on/off back pain all day and just put it down to getting near my EDD and stuff, I went to bed but my mum dragged me out as she had a feeling so I got dragging into hospital, midwife left me in the delivery room only to come back half hour later to say she could see the head and soon as she said that my waters went and DD came verey soon after.

I am 29 weeks on Monday with DS now and hope its as quick and I am as clueless again haha as I couldnt stand being stuck in a hospital pacing the floors for hours waiting.

Oh..mein..gott to some of your birth stories!
Especially lolster and asdx2!!

I just have a feeling that this time will be different, just as the entire pg has been. I have 'brewed up gradually' with all my other 3, only the last one I had a gradual show over a few days.

I feel all weird still and funny pains, not like contractions, on and off. Maybe tis wishful thinking! Am also concerned as is number 4 and could be fast anyway..

Hi,

I do not wish to cause alarm, but I did at 32 & 2, when i had spontaneous rupture of membranes - waters broke..............
All ok now though (18 weeks later!)

I did. It was 10 days before my due date. I was expecting to go overdue (even though I'm very glad I didn't as DS was 8lbs 11oz). DS wasn't even engaged at all. Went to the toilet and kept leaking as I got up. Waters went and contrations started 30 minutes later. After 15 minutes they were less than 5 minutes apart.

yUP with my 1st i got up to wave dh off to work at 38 weeks boasting i had 2 weeks at least to sit on my fat ass and do bugger all then i went to loo and produced a small spot of blood, dh drove of the drive to work and my waters exploded - contractions blah blah, long labour and dd born early next day, 2 nd time exact same time in morning 7.30am no niggles before or anything then a small spot of blood, contractions straight away thick and fast and ds out 3.5 hrs later.

yep, waters went at 3am. No pain for another hour or so, got to hospital and they refused to examine me as I couldn't possibly be in labour (ummm excuse me? 34 weeks with twins, wholly possible actually).
They wanted me go on the monitor for 30 mins instead. Had a stand up row with 2 midwives where I refused to lie on the bed to have the monitor attached...

Turns out I was 8cm and was tranferred to delivery quite quickly!

Yes, with ds2 born just over an hour later. Fortunately I was in hospital for a check-up at the time. Was at 40+4.
