Oh crikey Amanda1 - what an emotional time for you. I read your posts about your ex-partner but had no idea you were pregnant. I wish you luck.
Re: the amnio - I have never had one, but I do have friends that have, and have had CVS's too. Theirs went fine. I'm sure someone more experienced will be along to offer advice and reassurance.

Oh and I don't think anyone would shoot you down in flames either.

Hi Amanda, Good heavens my friend, how dare anyone try to shoot you down in flames. It sounds as though you've had moe than your fair share of stress to deal with!

Re the amnio, I had the test done with both my children. I had no qualms about it at all. I have family experience of Downs and was fully aware of the test itself.

I was confident the consultant did a good job, as you are able to watch on the screen as the needle goes in your tum and my babies didn't seem to be affected in any shape or form at all from watching them. I was advised to rest for 48 hrs after and that was it.

The peace of mind on having the result was wonderful, I was left to enjoy the rest of the pregnancy.

If you have decided to have the test then please don't worry unduly about it.

can i ask why i didnt terminate and if its cos u couldnt do it would u be able to go through with it if there was something wrong. this is the reason i didnt get 1 as no matter the outcome i would have kept my dd. so if there was something wrong and u decided not to terminate u would worry the whole time for the rest of ur pg. all im saying is think about what u would do if it came back that there was something wrong. does that make sense.

I meant to make another point in my post but forgot - if you have an amnio and the result is positive for Downs, the other way of looking at things is it gives you time to find support (from Downs Society etc). Termination isn't the only option on a positive result remember.

I had an amnio and it is purely an individuals decision and you shouldn't be swayed by anyone elses beliefs. My amnio went fine and thankfully the results were good. The procedure itself only took a couple of minutes and the consultant who did it was fantastic (he talked to us for about 30mins before he went ahead). It wasn't painful at all and you could watch the whole thing on the screen.

He didn't see why I should rest as he said research does not show any difference of the risks if you rest or not - therefore within 1hour I was back at work (as a nurse and nobody new that I had had anything done))

i had a amnio with my ds it all went well,but the rest of the day i was a bag of nerves.the one thing my consultant asked us before we went ahead will you have a termination if there are abnormabilates ? because if you do not its a big risk to take.ihope what ever you chose it all goes well.

edgetop - i was advised the same about would you terminate 'v' or still continue with pregnancy.

good luck Amanda, what a emotional rollercoaster you seem to be on at the moment. good luck in all you decide to do, and if people do shoot you down in flames then just ignore them. only shallow and ignorant people are like that.

I had CVB done at 11wks - similar to amnio, but instead of amniotic fluid they take some placenta. The procedure itself was fine, but i was a bit shockt to discover they use no local anaesthetic on your belly!

the worst part was the waiting for the results - it took about 2 weeks, and in that time you do a lot of worrying and what if thinking.
