Low Blood Cells

Had a phone call yesterday from my midwife saying that my blood test results have come back and that I have low blood cells - she didn't explain what she meant and I don't have an appointment with her until Tuesday. Does anyone know what having low blood cells means and the implications of having them?

I am 35 weeks pregnant

Many Thanks

Not sure what she means. Could you phone her and ask her to explain? To save you worrying all weekend.

This can either be your Haemaglobin (Hb) level (stuff that helps carry the oxygen round) or the Mean Cell Volume (amount of blood cells available to do the carrying) If it is your Hb then you are anaemic and I guess she would have said so, depending on the level as you are 35 weeks they may not want to do anything, it takes a couple of weeks of taking iron tablets for them to start to work properly and your Hb does drop slightly later in pregnancy. If it is the MCv then I am unsure how they would treat it, possibly a transfusion if it was really low but if that was the case she would have told you - I suspect they will just want to keep an eye on it. If you are concerned ring back, that is what they are there for if the MW is no help phone your GP.
