Moses basket mattress - it looks so uncomfortable!!

Hi all

Just had our new moses basket delivered (John Lewis Waffle one) and the mattress looks AWFUL! Thin, plasticy and not at all snuggly and comfortable. I'm thinking about buying a new mattress (only £12 from JL) but am worried it will have the same problem. Does anyone have any tips for making these more comfortable? I have a sheepskin but it's too big and don't really want to shell out for another one.. I thought about double-sheeting it, which might help?

They are fine- seriously, the one you can buy seperately is probably the same mattress.

Don't put a sheepskin in there- the baby could overheat. Babies need far less bedding than you might think, and you may find that your baby doesn't like the basket in any way.

Also, don't waste money on special little sheets for them, a pillowcase is the exact correct size.

As far as i know all moses basket mattress's are the same, I was told by my MW that they are made that way for saftey reasons. I agree with SecretNutellaFix dont use the sheepskin in the moses it will be very warm for the baby.

Im on baby number 3 now and each time ive used just a fitted sheet over the mattress then an airtext blanket to cover baby when needed (depending on time of year)

Thanks all, am DH thinks I am projecting my need for a super-soft mattress and feather pillows.. . All I can find on Google are similar looking mattresses, so will just have to hope DS doesn't have the same squishy mattress requirements as I do when he arrives...

a baby need firm support and not super squishiness! he'll get the super squishiness from mummy and daddy.

I wouldn't bother getting a different one, but... We have been given a second hand moses basket and got a new mattress from Mothercare which I think is nicer than the original. It cost £25.

I thought this when I got mine but figured that a baby is really light and so doesn't need soomething big and thick to support it. Glad you asked the question though because I was wondering and even went to mothercare today to check the other ones out, they all seemed to be the same.

I think it's the plastickyness of it that worries me the most, but I guess thats the most practical?? The one I was looking at on the JL website looks quilted, but I guess might feel the same.

The JL quilted one is fine. The cover is material, with a foam inner, and the cover is washable. The plasticy one that came with our basket was probably just foam inside with a plastic sweaty non-removable cover and I didn't fancy it either. We kept the plasticy one for use in case baby wet through or puked while we washed the mattress cover (but found we didn't need it for that) and also for extra comfort in the pram carrycot when DS was very small. For DD we've bought the same quilted one again.

The mattress on our mamas & papas moses basket was very thin. DD didn't take to it so she sleeps in the pram carrycot (which is safe for sleep - says in the manual sp presumably not all carrycots are? ) and the mattress in that is much thicker. It's very firm and has the same waterproof coating but is 3x the moses thickness.

We didn't bother with a moses basket first time and aren't doing this time either. Carry cot was expensive, super comfy and we want to get some use out of it!

We do tend to think that babies need the same comfort as we do but we forget they are a lot smaller and need a lot less support x

Thanks aendr (and others!), thats exactly what I'd hoped it was, but hard to tell from the pics.

for DS2 I put two mattresses in the moses basket, one on top of the other, as they were so thin. (foam filled Mothercare ones).This still provided a flat non saggy surface for him but just a bit more padding.
