Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

Splash, did you have a scan? Was it ok?

Egypt · 17/09/2003 19:03

hi bunny, yes i am rhesus negative. still to get preg confirmed by doc....cant get in ! going tomorrow, phew. (actually turned up today - 14 hours early! oooops)
anyway, what have u been told about rhesus - ?

bunny2 · 17/09/2003 19:53

Hi Egypt, me old mate! I know from my first pg that I will need anti-D jabs at certain times (I think they start around 24 wks). What concerns me is when I had my m/c I dont remember being given anti-D and therefore to add to my list of concerns is the issue of rhesus incompatibility. Do you know anything about this? I have looked in different books but they are all a bit sketchy. What I specifically want to know is, if I wasnt given anti-D after my m/c could it result in another m/c this time?

bunny2 · 17/09/2003 19:54

ps good luck tomorrow Egypt. Let us know how it goes.

bluecow · 17/09/2003 20:34

Bunny2 -sorry you're feeling so rough. I have found my nausea never seems quite so bad if I eat as early as I can (toast!) in the morning - ie/ I try not to get too much of a rumbly tum. For some reason my sickness seems not quite so bad on those days.
Dot1 - what a shame you couldn't make the scan. They can't fit you in somewhere?

Egypt · 17/09/2003 20:54

bunny,
Quoting from miriam stoppard -

"If the mother is not given an Anti-D injection within 48 hours of delivery, she may develop anti-bodies to rehesus positive blood. If she becomes pregnant with another rhesus positive baby, her antibodies may attack this babies red blood cells."

Perhaps you should check this out sooner rather than later. Not sure if it applies after a miscarriage. Is dh rhesus+ ?

HTH, and not worries you x

mears · 18/09/2003 10:54

Some information for you about Anti-D. It does not need to be given after a miscarriage which occurs before 12 weeks. The booking bloods taken at the beginning of your pregnancy confirms your blood group and antibodies are looked for. The antibody check is repeated at 28weeks and 34 weeks. The giving of routine Anti-D has been recommended at 28 weeks and 34 weeks to prevent antibodies forming in the event of undetected bleeding going on between the mother and baby. I myself had antibodies and my last baby needed 3 exchange blood transfusions.
Anti-D is a blood product which has been assured to be safe. However, I think that women should be informed that if they know that their partners blood group is Rhesus negative, then anti-D is not needed.

mears · 18/09/2003 11:02

I should have said that my last baby was born nearly 10 years ago and anti-D was not given routinely during pregnancy. Despite that happening to me I am a bit concerned about the giving of routine anti-D because it is a blood product and many women won't need it. I actually had severe abdominal pain at 34 weeks into my pregnancy and I believe that is when a small bleed took place. Blood does not normally mix between mother and baby but can if their is any bleeding at the placenta and obviously there cam be a mix after delivery. When Rh positive blood of the baby goes into the Rh neg mothers circulation, she produces antibodies. When she goes onto have another pregnancy, if it is a Rh positive baby, the antibodies recognises that blood group and attacks it. Anti-D when it is given, coats the baby's blood cells to stop the mother developing antibodies to them. There isn't a problem when the baby is rhesus negative.

Hi

hope you're feeling better Dot and Bunny2. Like you both I'm still feeling pretty sick. I can't eat fruit or veg though normally I love them. Just looking at a peach on my desk made me feel really ill. Am eating lots of baked potatoes and ginger biscuits, and peppermint tea.

Had a bad day feeling really ill while looking after dds (age 3 and 2) and my neice (11 months) - awful, I just wanted to lie down away from them all. Why did I ever want a 3rd child, it's too much...

At least my boobs, all sad and saggy from two lots of breastfeeding, are looking good now!

dot1 · 18/09/2003 13:27

Hi Fennel - sounds like the day from hell for you yesterday - takes me all my energy to look after ds (21 months)!

I'm not feeling too bad - just have gone off most things I usually like to eat - particuarly meat, so I'm really stuck for meals, as I don't really like veg..! Am trying to avoid eating Cornflakes 3 times a day, but it's tempting...

Oddly whilst I am extremely lucky not to be feeling sick (big sympathies to you sufferers), I have developed all sorts of food aversions like the rest of you seem to be experiencing. At the moment I can eat chocolate, cake, (seriously! - I don't want it that way, its just the way it is), oven chips, cheese and baked beans. Everything else seems really, really icky and unpalatable.

bunny2 · 18/09/2003 14:48

Egypt and Mears, thanks for the info on rheus- . Mears, if an anti-D jab was omitted after my m/c, as the m/c was @ 10 weeks (but removed at 14 wks), would this have any affect on my current pg?

mears · 19/09/2003 09:59

You will have been tested for antibodies already in this pregnancy when the booking bloods were done. If you had any, you would have been told so I think you can relax about it. There will be no effects on this pregnancy.

bunny2 · 19/09/2003 16:24

Mears, I havebt had my booking appt yet!! I saw the midwife and got a few leaflets but she wont be doing the booking till 11 wks. I did ask her if there were likely to be any problems regarding not getting anti-D but she said this pg would not have progressed as far as it had (7 wks at the time) if I had built up antibodies. I still worry though.

hewlettsdaughter · 20/09/2003 20:35

Bunny2, if your m/c happened at 10 weeks (regardless of when it was detected/removed) I would have thought that you won't have had time to make antibodies. I am rhesus -ve too. I had Anti-D in my first pregnancy and guess I will have it this time round too (didn't know that you don't need it if your partner is also rhesus -ve, don't what blood group dh is though!). I'll be ringing up to arrange my booking in appointment soon. My GP said to make it for 12 weeks.

bunny2 · 20/09/2003 22:01

Hi HD, good to have you back! The only reason I am worried about the antibodies is becasue before the m/c I was bleeding every other day for weeks. I am pretty sure I was given anti-D after the event but I was so upset I wasnt really aware of what was going on. I know they did a blood test before the op to remove the bits and noted I was rhesus neg so I presume they did act on it. I am just worried about everything and will be till my scan. How are you? I sneezed yesterday and put my back out so I have that aswell as the constant nausea to put up with . Also getting very wobbly around the middle - is it baby stuff if it wobbles or is it just fat?

hewlettsdaughter · 21/09/2003 19:22

If they noted you were rhesus -ve they would have acted on it if they felt it necessary, I'm sure. Try not to worry. Feeling ick myself - we seem to have moved on from not feeling any symtoms don't we! (PS I'm sure it's baby stuff )

bunny2 · 21/09/2003 21:00

Hd I ma sure you're right, I wish I could relax a bit more and enjoy being pg. Feel so sick now all I can eat is cornflakes and plain spaghetti. Everything else, even just cooking it, makes me feel sick. And I'm still hobbling round like an old woman with a bad back. To top it all, a crack addict has just moved in next door and has dodgy goings-on all night long. Great place to raise 2 kids eh.

dot1 · 22/09/2003 11:26

Hi Bunny - sorry to hear about your back - and this will sound strange, but are you doing particularly violent sneezes at the moment?! I'm only asking because I've started doing these huge sneezes that take over my whole body! Very strange indeed - I feel like I have to hold my tummy in case I pull anything...!

Still feeling nauseaus - especially around tea time - not good when trying to prepare ds's tea... Gone off all meat and pretty much anything tasty/nutritious, so I'm thinking about taking some pregnancy vitamins to give baby a fighting chance of getting some goodness!

OP posts:
bluecow · 22/09/2003 14:20

Hurrah for cornflakes - they seem to be the one thing we can all eat without wanting to chuck up too much!
Bunny2 - have you told the police about your neighbour?
Dot1 - yes I have been sneezing, often one straight after another which is always quite a shock. I have been taking pregnancy vits again this time as I was so sick with ds I reckoned I needed something. Some days I feel worse than others but on the whole I don't feel as sick this time round. Two weeks till my scan!

bunny2 · 22/09/2003 21:08

I too have been sneezing, that's how I put my back out. I did a huge sneeze and something went twang! Weird eh? but my back is getting better.

Nausea still bad, had tinned tomato soup and sheese on toast for supper, and for lunch. I cant cook for dh and ds so they get the same bland menu.

We complained to the bloke who owns next door. It's a house converted into 2 flats that are rented out. The people downstairs are really friendly with us so we all hassled the landlord who had no idea that his new tennant was dealing from his property, he has now given him his marching orders and he will be out by the weekend. Result!

bluecow · 23/09/2003 12:23

Bunny - hurrah! That's good news. Currently have a craving for Sainsburys pork breakfast sausage. One packet for lunch (18 slices!)

bunny2 · 24/09/2003 14:28

Yurghh, meat, how could you? Cheese is the way to go, chese rolls, cheese on toast, spaghetti with grated cheese, lumps of cheese, cant get enough. Still feel sick though

bluecow · 24/09/2003 20:17

Arf. Well it's not greasy like ham or anything and it's sweetish (yuk thats sounds horrid but I don't know how else to describe it). They are only little slices by the way...! I managed scrambled egg on toast tonight (cooked so there were no runny bits of course - which is not half as nice as it is when slightly runny). I'm still sickish though - walking past the hot chicken counter at Tescos today made me feel really retchy. Finally got my booking in appointment this Saturday.
