Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

Not spoilt at all!

I agree about tiredness at work but at no other time. I've been whipping down to the sick room in my lunch hours and having little naps for a 1/2 hour. Does make me feel a lot better.

Lesley76 · 16/02/2004 20:46

MB - you didn't sound spoilt at all. After all , you've had these plans in place for months. When even small things go wrong I get the feeling that it will all unravel somehow.I know I would crack up if someone suggested that I go to the hospital alone ie without DH. He works away from home a lot and I'm already paranoid that he wont get back in time. Not that I'm anticipating a short labour ( sadly).........

dot1 · 17/02/2004 09:40

I'd have gone mad aswell MB! We're getting dp's parents to have ds - the plus side of having moved! My mum's going to drive us in as dp can't drive. I wouldn't want to do a minute of labour on my own - have told dp she's not leaving the room until the baby's out!!

Yeah - we've exchanged on our house! Hope to complete tomorrow, which will mean moving in on March 1st - first day of my maternity leave! It's almost starting to work out OK now - I'm feeling much calmer at the thought of having a month to settle and nest! So fingers crossed the money stuff all goes through OK tomorrow morning!

dot1 - so glad it is finally going through. A month will be plenty to nest and it will probably be quite cool to be busy rather than just 'waiting'. I have just over a month till I go off but the nesting has been kicking in.

We have been doing big cleanups and sort outs in our flat in preparation for the parents staying and making sure everything we own has a place. I'm finding dust in places I would never have thought to look for it too.

dolbear · 18/02/2004 23:00

wow , feeling for the first time that having the 1st seems a lot simpler ( in a warped way ) no worries about what to do with rest of the family. Glad to hear the move is progressing , we did it last yr & was v 'orrible , can only imagine what must be like being pg as well ! i got another 4 weeks before ML , is ok as hubby seems to be in 'nesting ' mode , while I watch telly !! ? I swear we are the wrong way round , he makes a far better wife than me !

dolbear · 18/02/2004 23:05

a little P.S. for Mb , not that u do sound spoilt , but if you were , if we can not indulge in a bit of ' throwing our toys out of the pram 'now , when can we ? go for it that what I say ! The next person who rubs me like Aladin's lamp with out asking , gets it !

hewlettsdaughter · 19/02/2004 19:41

You tell 'em, dolbear
Dot, did you complete? Glad it's all sounding more positive now.
My mum is supposed to be coming down for around the time I am due - I have decided to ask her to come so she is here for the day ds starts school (which is 3 days before I'm due). That way, if I haven't already had the baby, but go into labour while he's at school, she will be around to pick him up etc. Hope the baby isn't late though! Much as I love my mum, I don't know how many days we can live together harmoniously

dot1 · 20/02/2004 09:28

Hurrah! We have a house!! dp's Dad is being a star and doing lots of DIY jobs, and we move in properly on March 1st - lots of painting and stuff to do before then - but not by me, obviously..!

I've started to get really breathless this week - can hardly catch my breath - how's everyone else doing with breathing?! Also even my wonderful Zantac tablets aren't coping with my heartburn at night - baby must be squishing my lungs and tummy at the moment... Can't wait to finish work - a week today - although it's starting to get scary - can't quite believe I'm coming up to 35 weeks...!

udar · 20/02/2004 13:08

I know time is certainly flying now isn't it.
Congrats on the house - must be such a relief!

It is so interesting how different everyone's experiences of pregnancy are, I've still had no heartburn and haven't really had any problems with my breathing at all. Only back pain. When the baby moves it is always really low down in my stomach and seems to play my hip bones like a xylophone, nothing near my ribs.

Started the one cup a day of rasberry leaf tea this week - not being a tea drinker it just tastes of tea so am not finding it all that pleasant but am going to try everything to help.

One month yesterday until I go off on maternity leave, but I feel OK about lasting through. Sometimes I even forget I'm pregnant and go to squeeze past someone in the tube and bump into them as my stomach is protruding more than it feels like it is. Very bizarre I know.

hewlettsdaughter · 20/02/2004 19:56

No heartburn here either, although getting some muscle/joint (?) pain, like you udar. Baby doesn't kick much although I do feel it moving around. Great news re the house, dot!

dot1 · 23/02/2004 09:06

Udar - I know this sounds awful but I wish I could forget I was pregnant sometimes! Occasionally when I wake up if baby's still asleep I forget for a few minutes - puts me in a really good mood - then I try to roll over!! Baby seems to kick and move all the time - all day and night. I started to get some 'weird' pains this weekend - I think just stronger Braxton Hicks - like period-type pains - the biggest one being in B&Q yesterday - was quite excited we might get free stuff if I went into labour..! But I know it's too early yet - just my body practising I think!

Udar - hope the back ache's manageable - I think any kind of chronic pain can be quite depressing. I think you're brave starting on the raspberry tea - I thought I'd start after we've moved house next week - need baby to stay in for at least another 3 weeks..!

Metrobaby · 23/02/2004 09:21

Udar - I keep forgetting about the size of my bump too, and bumping into things or trying to squeeze through small gaps.

I've started to walk much slower now - probably developing the pg waddle by now I can't wait to go on mat leave - only another 4 wks to go but honestly there are times when I wish I could leave tomorrow

udar · 23/02/2004 13:19

Did everyone have a good weekend? I had a lovely one - my girlfriends threw me a surprise baby shower on Saturday afternoon which was lovely.
It really hit home over the weekend how great my friends were when one of them started lecturing dh about how he had to call them when I went into labour (incase my family hadn't arrived) as then there would be nobody to look after him when he was busy looking after me and that they were volunteering. These are 2 girlfriends I have had since early high school in NZ and we are all living in London so it is great to have them here like family.

dot1 · 23/02/2004 13:35

Udar - that's lovely! I'm going to miss my best friend being around - she's in London - she came up this weekend with lots of baby stuff she's passing on - her ds is 1. Feels weird that she won't be around to come and see me and baby in hospital - we saw each other's ds1's when they were a day old!

Congrats to Dot1 on the new house! I'm seriously impressed by those of you who are still at work. I've stopped already ( technically on annual leave then mat leave) & I'm still really tired and collapsing by 8pm.

I'm not breathless at all as my baby is transverse but this means i will have to have a c-section ( i assume) if it doesn't turn. i also get LOTS of kicks but they are not too uncomfortable as they are low down or in my side, rather than in my stomach or lungs. Still get heartburn though.

Am so relieved that i'm not the only one who keeps walking into things because i forget how fat i am!! i also keep dropping things.........

dolbear · 23/02/2004 20:02

heelo , feelin v breathless at this end , dh thinks I am practising my breathing !! 3 weeks to go until give up work and it feels like forever ! I would be fine if the little one would stop headbutting my bladder! Nice to hear that so many of u have so much family support etc , i will b doing my best to keep my mother as far away as poss , its either that or stangle her ! no heartburn , but weird pins and needles feeling the size of a thunb print under my right boob ? bizar !
I don't mind dropping things all the time , it's the picking them back up again I have the problem with.

Lesley76 · 24/02/2004 14:30

LOL Dol Dolbear - your comment about picking things up again cheered me up after another depressing ante natal class

Don't know why i keep going. Have now become the class rebel and keep asking awkward questions.........

Lesley76 · 24/02/2004 18:04

Can anyone tell me what a Braxton Hicks feels like? Someone told me its dull and achey like a period pain, but last night i had a pain right across the bottom of my uterus and I'm wondering if that was one? It was a sharp tight pain just like a stitch you get in your side but over a larger area & it only lasted about 30 secs.

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions again...........

udar · 25/02/2004 10:07

Mine feel like an incredible tightness right across my stomach. Sometimes they are a little to one side or the other. Occasionally they make me feel a little 'ouch' and I have to concentrate to see if comes back again after it goes away incase it is an early contraction.

udar · 25/02/2004 10:08

Lesley what is so depressing about your antenatal classes. We really enjoyed ours, didn't want them to finish and the people were lovely that we were in class with. Almost everybody challenged and actively participated with questions and 'but I'd been told' stories.

dot1 · 25/02/2004 10:45

Lesley - that kind of pain could be your ligaments stretching - I'm getting sharp pains sometimes which I'm assuming is everything pulling/stretching, but then the Braxton Hicks are like this tightening feeling across my bump - getting 'stronger' - more uncomfortable than they have been - make me want to stop what I'm doing until it's gone. You might not feel any Braxton Hicks - my dp didn't at all - so try not to worry (ho, ho - at this stage everything feels like a worry..!).

OP posts:
handlemecarefully · 25/02/2004 10:57

I think Braxton hicks (like baby's movements) are felt differently by everybody. I would agree that it feels like a tightening sensation, but I've never found them particularly uncomfortable or painful. But then my baby's movements are quite 'mild' too. Getting paranoid - maybe because I have let myself get lardy during this pregnancy means I don't feel things so acutely! (lots of fat padding)

I'm looking forward to next Monday (1st April) - because when people ask me when the baby is due, I can reply 'next month' - which sounds really soon. It will feel like a major milestone has been reached!

dot1 · 25/02/2004 11:41

me too HMC - only I can say "this month" as my due date's March 31st - aarrggghhhh!!!

OP posts:
dolbear · 25/02/2004 18:55

L 76 sos to hear that your ante natal classes are so depressing ! totaly support the class rebel stance , I recomend askin if you can have an epedural and drink , ask how many jack daniels u r allowed at home before you have to go into hospital ? I did , v amusing
braxton hicks ? no idea , I have period aches , sharp pains , tightness pains I have'nt got a clue which ones are the hicks !! still i suppose it is all part of the same thing
anyone got any ideas on how to shift this pins and needles thing REALY anoying

Lesley76 · 25/02/2004 22:12

Thanks for the reassurance about the pains. Will try not to worry. Was just a little concerned that I shouldn't have been doing what i was just before i had the pain ( no don't ask me, just use your imagination!!!).

I guess as Dot said that i just worry about everything at this stage.........worried i might be going into premature labour...worried i might NOT go into labour until have a huge baby and be permanantly damaged trying to squeeze it out of you know where.......worried i might have to have a section....worried i might NOT have a section and have to go through labour.....worried i might go through 12 hours of labour and THEN have a section....etc

BTW Dolbear - how many drinks CAN you have at home before you go to the hospital (I assume that's when you are in labour and not for your next out-patient appointment)? Can you take painkillers? (suspect those of you who've had a baby already will be rolling around laughing at this point)

Re antenatal classes - i find them depressing because of the c* we are told and the patronising manner of some of the people teaching the classes. All the other class members seem really nice although some seem a teeny bit naive eg the woman who said she wasn't worried about having an assisted delivery with forceps because it didn't hurt.........

Sorry if this sounds like I'm being patronising myself. Manybe i'm just old and cynical and p*ed off...
