Removing Acryllic Nails

Hi all, I just wanted to check what the safest way is of removing acryllic nails when pregnant? I normally go to a cheapo place near where I live and think I will probably gag from the smell in there plus am worried that the fumes will be bad for my baby (am only 6+5). I heard that I can remove them myself with ammonia but perhaps this is harmful too?

You can remove them with any acetone based nail varnish remover. Put vaseline on your cuticles to stop them drying out. This website is quite good.

Fumes aren't really good for you, there's some suggestions that they can cause defects but nothing is proven so I'd do them by an open window/ in a well ventilated area if you can.

Yup, and make sure you take your time. Don't be too hasty as you can end up removing the top of your nail bed (ouch).

Hello-
I JUST took mine off myself yesterday and used Superdrug acetone nail polish remover. Had to soak for 30 mins and keep wiping off layers every 5 mins or so when they felt 'mushy' on top.
Then kept dipping and peeling till came off (for another 30 mins)
Then filed down the remaining bits of glue.

Now stubby little fingernails--boo hoo. Are you going to have yours re-done? I can't decide to-or to let them grow and have mesh overlays while preg.

Oh I'm such an ejit - of course it is accetone and not amonia!

Thanks girls - I am going to pop into Superdrug after work.

I don't think I am going to get them done again during the pregnancy in order to save money and avoid the smelly nail shop :)

Your welcome

You'll probably find your nails grow in thicker/stronger, mines are practically unbreakable these days! :)

Sounds fantastic - have always had pretty weak nails :)

If you put the acetone on top of a bowl of warm water to heat it up a bit it will work faster, be careful not to scald yourself though as the acetone can get hotter than water.

Don't use nail polish remover with acetone, it will take forever lol! You can buy neat acetone from the chemist for a couple of quid, works much faster but agree with needing to keep to a well-ventilated area.

Fab - am trying it tomorrow eve. What an exciting Friday night it will be :)
