Head is 4/5 engaged?

I've just been to see the midwife and baba is 4/5 engaged.

Does this mean he's 4/5 of the way down or that he still has 4/5 left to go?? I've tried googling it, but google seems just as confused??

Ive had this explained to me so many times and I always get it muddled up!
Anyway, after seeing consultant last week and midwife they both said my baby was 2/5 engaged which basically means there is only 2/5 of my baby's head palpable. But this is my second so its bobbing up and down a lot!

5/5's means the baby's head is free and they're able to feel it all and the lower the figure gets the further in the pelvis the head is. Or this is how I understand it to be!

I got told it was the other way around and that once head was 3/5 engaged it would be hard for them to bob back up again. Can you call midwife at the hospital and ask them to explain?

I am 3/5 engaged which I was told meant 3/5 in (so midwife could feel 2/5 out) but a friend of mine told me it was the complete opposite! I would call your midwife and ask them what they meant.

How confusing

Different midwives sometimes say it different ways.

But dd was engaged and fixed with only 1/5 palpable (so 4/5 in) for 8 weeks. So if you're hoping for a sign of imminent labour, it's not that straightforward!

Not hoping for imminent labour, am only 31+4 so not ready for that yet!!!

The GP told me I was 3/5th engaged and wrote on my notes 2/5 Palpable, and explained it just like marmitelover's explanation.

But she also said they can pop out, so it might change between now and B-Day
