12 wk scan -anyone had discrepancy with dates?

I went to my 12 week scan a couple of weeks ago (well I thought I was 13 wks) and was told that I was actually 12 weeks but when she was measuring the baby she said he/she was curled up quite a lot and so was hard to measure and so now I'm thinking she measured it wrong and baby is larger than I was told.

I'm now 14+3 and have definitely 'felt' someting-little movements late at night. (2nd pregnancy so I know what it feels like) it's more likely surely if I'm 15 wks?

I'm convinced she got the dates wrong- I suppose I'll know at the 20 wk scan. Anyone else had this?

Yes, every scan has dated me differently from what I thought I was going by my LMP, but if you're not out by more than a week I wouldn't think too much about it, some eggs take a little longer to implant I suppose..?
BTW, I felt each baby moving earlier and earlier in each subsequent pregnancy: CD#1 at 20 weeks, DC#2 at 16, and DC#3 at 14 weeks.

CD#1..? Doh! You know what I meant!

They moved my due date forwards 3 days. This would mean I conceived while DP was 300 miles away visiting his sick father. I am sticking my my dates THVM!

Well taking into account the fact that the day you have sex isn't necessarily the day you conceive, implantation can differ by a few days between women and between pregnancies, limitations of machine and sonographer and the way the baby lies, a few days discrepancy, even a week is nothing out of the ordinary.

And tbh, your baby will still come when it comes, the dates are just a provisional guide. The only reason I'd ever fight them is if they were trying to push induction based on erroneous dates.

ShowOfHands · 03/08/2010 10:31

And the 20wk scan is much less accurate at dating. Babies develop fairly uniformly in the first trimester, hence the dating scan. By 20wks genetics, individual development etc make much more of a difference.

Absolutely ShowofHands, but you can't conceive 3 days before you have sex!

I am happy for them to have their scan date for now, but if I go "overdue" I will be arguing a strong case against induction - our local area's policy is to induce a few days before 42 weeks, which would be at 41 weeks by my dates, wheras I see no reason not to go to 43 (or 42 and a half anyhow - which would be 43 to them IYKWIM)

I had something like this with my second. I looked big for weeks even my GP commented on size and questioned edd and I felt the baby move at 12 weeks (if you rely on dating scan date) which is way early than any books say you can feel movement. I questioned the edd with hospital several times but certainly where i was once you have your date it's SET IN STONE FOR ALL ETERNITY.

Baby came 3 weeks 'early' at 7lb2 which is a pretty good weight for a baby 1 day off being classified as premature....

ShowOfHands · 03/08/2010 10:49

Yes Porcelain, that's why I only listed it as one possible mitigating factor.

As Raejj shows, the baby still comes when it's ready and the only reason to fight it is for homebirth/induction reasons. If it affects your care then it's a problem. But 3 days either way isn't going to make a huge amount of difference to anything.

Although, I would have kicked up a stink if dd's edd had been on an even number. I don't like even numbers.

When I had my 12 week scan with my DS, now almost 3, i was told he was due two weeks earlier than my midwife had worked out on my booking in appointment. But had he actually been due then he would have been conceived before i came of the pill!! He was born by induction 3 days after his due date due to me having pre eclampsia. I think because they go by size of baby its probably hard to determine due date as surely all babies are slightly different.
We are now expecting our second, and had to have an emergency scan a few weeks back due to bleeding and their measured weeks and days were precise according to my ovualtion dates, have my 12 week scan next week so will see what that brings :-)

SaraL77 · 04/08/2010 16:08

interesting to hear I'm not the only one with date/size issues. I suppose with my last pregnancy it was so straight forward- my DS was born on his due date- a 5% chance!

I'm not too bothered I suppose- I'll just make sure I take 3 weeks minimum off before the birth to allow for potential due date mistakes!

my twelve week scan gave an EDD of 10 days earlier than I KNOW its really due. I know the LMP date and can narrow conception date down to within two or three days. Bump measures small for the scan dates but almost in line with my dates. No-one will lesten to me!! I know I will be arguing against induction at some point over the next few weeks!!
