Is it normal to be asked to come back for another scan because they can't find an organ?

Had 20 week scan yesterday and they asked me to come back in a week because they couldn't see the kidneys to measure them because the baby was in wrong position. Is this normal? Everything else was fine. They didn't seem unduly worried. Thanks for any responses.

We had a private scan with DS. They tried to get measurements of his heart for nearly an hour and couldn't so we were sent away and told to come back after we had some lunch. By then he had moved and they took the measurements they needed. That was at fetal medicine centre, which is a very good place for scans in terms of equipment etc. So I wouldn't worry, I'm sure its just a question of checking when the baby is in a different position.

I'm sure everything is fine. Lack of kidneys, or potters syndrome is accompanied by not enough waters I think, so if they thought it was that I'm sure they would look at other indicators and would be treating it more seriously.

Hope all is ok, try not to worry.

In my first pregnancy I came back for a second 20 week scan as they couldn't identify everything first time due to babies position. Don't think this is anything to worry about. This time around they got everything first time but it took ages and the sonographer asked me to get up, roll over etc to get baby to shift a bit.

I had to go back for similar reasons - it also meant they couldn't see if the baby was a boy or girl, which was fine as we didn't want to know (and were very specific about not finding out at the second scan).

Everything was fine.

I had this too! At my 20 week scan they couldn't see/measure the kidneys properly despite me changing positions various times and emptying bladder etc!

I went back two weeks later and all was fine.
The sonographer did tell me that people didn't realise how reliant they were on the baby being in a good position to get all the measurements they need.
Don't worry, it will all be fine

Yep, they couldn't see all the valves of the heart at my first scan and we had to go back a week later. All was fine. I think its very common, don't panic

Yup, like everyone else said it seems to be normal. We had a 22 week scan this week and have to go back in 3 weeks as they couldn't measure the heart and thorax of either twin.

I asked the woman if there was any problem and she said that she wasn't expecting any problems at all (all other meaaurements were normal) just that they were in the wrong position to see properly.

So, nothing to worry about!

I just had my 20 week scan this week at the Fetal Medicine Centre and they couldn't immediately get the measurements they needed because of the baby's position. I had to get up, empty bladder, move around etc - eventually they did. But I've often heard women having to go back for NHS scans because of this. I really wouldn't worry - I think they would have indicated a concern instead of a visibility issue.

With DD1 I had to go back as they couldn't see whole of her spine because of her position. I wsan't worried - it was only after the return visit (everything was fine) that my Mum admitted how worried she'd been as she'd had a sister with spina bifida - never talked about her before.

It's perfectly normal to have a return scan - if they had seen anything wrong or were worried then they would have told you there and then.

With this one we almost had to go back, as he was facing completely the wrong way, they couldn't get a good look at his heart.

They sent me to the toilet and we had a good prod at him when I got back, and luckily he moved and they got what they needed, and we all got a good look at his bits and pieces at the same time, good job we wanted to know really!

I'm sure if they were concerned something was wrong they would have told you then, so I'm sure everything's fine.

With DS2 they couldn't see the stomach - went back - all was fine. Very common - try not to worry.
