Should you wash new baby clothes and blankets before you use them,or do you just open the packet and put them on the baby ? just wondered what you do..

When Ds was tiny I'd always wash things first. Not entirely sure why though. For ages I'd wah his stuff separately from ours too.

greensnail · 30/07/2010 15:53

I don't bother washing them first. I love that fresh out of the packet feeling

I always wash everything before it is worn (for all of the children - not just when they are new babies)
I think clothes / blankets etc smell nicer for a wash in your own washpowder and (at the risk of sounding like my mother) it 'softnens them up'

wigglesrock · 30/07/2010 16:03

I never washed anything before being worn, although all my friends do!! I too washed baby clothes seperate from our own, not sure why!!

I hae been told that washing them first is best because of the chemicals use in the factory/making process.

Washing them will get rid of the shop dirt (I'm not sure if it is spectacularly paranoid to be concerned that someone's little darling sneezed on the babygro's or not, but I like them smelling freshly laundered anyhow) and it also softens them, most importantly it will soften the seams that might irritate a new baby's skin.

I have washed everything I have bought for baby, clothes, sheets, blankets and nappies (they are more absorbant after a couple of washes), and now it all smells of Fairy non bio I quite like this is a kind of pre-baby way where I go into the nursery and smell the drawers. Am I odd?

I wash everything before wearing. DH has very sensitive skin and can sometimes react to the detregents the factory uses or the fire retardent chemicals that are sometimes used in fabric.

As I do it for him I do it for everyone.

I washed everything, whether shop new or second hand from friends, so it was all washed in the same non-bio washing powder brand we usually use.
