Need help: increased sense of smell & sickness

Right here goes. I'm 13 weeks pg and for about 5 weeks now my sense of smell has been like that of a dog. My husband says I could be used as a sniffer dog!

Anyway. We moved into a brand new house about 2 months ago. Trouble is it has brand new carpet throughout (obviously) that's not actually the trouble. The fact that I can't bare the smell of the carpet is what's causing problems. Everytime I smell it it makes me vomit! I am spending everynight (from tea time onwards) in bed hiding under the covers. I'm sick everyday when returning from any outings I have. To stay downstairs I literally have to sit there with a babywipe over my face so I can't smell carpet

I should be enjoying my fantastic new dream home. But tbh I absolutely hate it! Can any one suggest anything at all?

I've tried plug ins but they too made me sick (midwife said too many chemicals is not a good thing anyway), magic tree car fresheners, shake and vac, pot pouri (sp?) fabreeze and so on.

I'M DESPERATE!!

Get the windows open as much as possible - airing is the only thing that can speed up the process of getting rid of the chemicals - anything else (e.g. febreeze) is just adding more.

The sickness should ease off. I still have a super-strong sense of smell but far fewer things make me actually sick now - I'm 20 weeks.

Thankyou the windows are permanently open. My house is freezing. I had a feeling it would be a 'time' thing. I was sick with ds1 until 19 weeks I have a feeling this will be the same - it's awful

oh i feel for you!!! my sense of smell picks up food smells for miles and i keep gagging as i drive past the local kebab place in the morning...it STINKS! i also find cleaning products make me gag, fresh paint (getting the house painted at the mo) and um pretty much anything else! We get new carpet in a few weeks, i hadnt even considered the smell might be a problem

goes off to weep

coraltoes · 29/07/2010 14:48

actually...might it be worth getting your carpets claned? maybe the shampoo will kill some of the smell??

iamreallysilly · 29/07/2010 14:54

AArgh, reminds me of when i was preg with DS, had to stay in spare room and only come out for drinks/loo/necessaries for several weeks as felt the rest of house smelled sooo bad (we have pets)

moonminmama · 29/07/2010 18:19

Iamreallysilly that's pretty much how I am at the minute. It's awful. I have considered borrowing my friends dog in the hope it would get rid of the smell. Dh However wasn't overly keen on that idea.

We've had the lounge and hallway waned but it made no difference whatsoever unfortunately.

Have had a better day today. Have actually been able to sit in the lounge without having to cover my nose. Fingers crossed for the next few weeks.

This could be a silly suggestion, but would a nose plug help? Like the ones you wear to stop getting water in your nose when you swim. I read somewhere that some pregnant women swear by them to be able to eat a meal as it dulls their taste as they can't smell. You might have odd red marks on the sides of your nose permenantely but it might help - even if you could only manage to keep it on for an hour or so.

Hi angels! the trouble is and this WILL sound stupid but even if i breathe in through my mouth it makes me feel sick. I can taste the smell. See told you it would sound daft!

I have been fine all day, feeling confident so ate tea at 5 (rather than half 7 which I have been doing) but then brought it all back up after getting a wiff of carpet its just the most bizarre and unpleasant thing. Think Im just going to have to ride it out and stay hidden in my room!

can you stay with family/friends for a few days??

CupcakesHay · 29/07/2010 20:28

Not just me then! I live abroad and was back in Uk last week. Since coming back to my house here - where it's bloody hot - i keep smelling stale cooked brocolli which makes me gag.

My DH can only smell it once in a while - so not sure if it's me being mad. I've tried airfreshner, opening windows, scattering cut lemons, leaving wads of cotton wool with TCP on them... and still it's here (and of course DH whinging about TCP)

We've checked drains, a/c units, bin, everything... very odd.

Have found only thing is sniffing TCP everynow and then! So TCP is my suggestion!

moonminmama · 29/07/2010 20:42

mmh TCP never thought of that. Have used albas oil, trouble is after a few days i become immune and go back to smelling carpet.

As for staying away, i have done that trouble is it seems to be worse when i get back. As if I am going back to square 1. My mum and dad are away at the moment so i have been going there as much as possible. It isnt really practical though because i have an almost 4 yo to look after.

moonminmama · 29/07/2010 21:15
