90th Percentile

Morning all,

I am now having 4 weekly scans as the baby is measuring in he 90th percentile and just wondered what other peoples experiences with this were and what happened.

I am hoping my LO is a little early as am uncomfortable at the moment and am only 29+4 not sure working 45 hours a week is helping with this though!

Both mine measured 90th centile plus (actually I think DS1 was off the charts). Both mine were born exactly on the 50th centile for their gestation (DS1 was prem).

Growth scans are notoriously inaccurate. Are you and DP big / tall? Is there a history of big babies in your family? Is this the first baby?

Someone has to be on 90th, try not to worry cos it doesn't mean anything is wrong and like owl says it is likely inaccurate.

Don't worry - my ds was like this - and stayed on that %ile. He was born on his due date, in 2.5 hours, no pain relief and a small tear. He was 10lbs 6oz. I exclusively BF him til he was 6m with no difficulty. He is now a completely average sized 9 year old. And I am on the larger side but by no means enormous.

Just thought I woul explode all the big baby myths I could think of all at the same time!

DS1 measured big throughout, I had a GTT (all clear), various growth scans, etc, etc. I ended up being induced about 4 days early, and his size was one of the reasons given.

I mean, the fact that he seemed big was no great mystery - both DH and I are tall!

Anyway, out he came, and he was 6lb 13 oz - hardly huge!! Although at 18 months he is now just above the 90th percentile.

They're now trying the same games with DD1-to-be - I am booked in for a growth scan next week - one day before my due date. I honestly can't muster up a decent amount of panic about it this time.

Oh, and baby's weight really doesn't have a huge bearing on how difficult your birth will be. Extra padding on a baby in terms of soft, squishy chubbiness is not difficult to push out. What IS difficult to push out is the head - and for a full-term baby this is about 10cm (which is why you need to be 10cm dilated before you start pushing), regardless of their weight.

Just wondering why you were asking? Are you worried about giving birth to a huge baby or is it that you don't want the interferance that having a suspected large baby brings?

I had a BMI of 35 at booking so am having growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks. The first showed baby to be average and have the next in a week. For me I don't want the baby to be big as I don't want to be pressured into being induced. I am happy to attempt birthing a large baby as from what I have read it is often easier as they put more pressure on the pelvic floor and therefore turn more easily in the birth canal.

I can report back to you when I have my baby which should be in just under 5 weeks!

Fundal height measurements for DS were always 3 weeks over for DS and he was 8lb 12 1/2 at 42 weeks so really not that big. When I asked the consultant how accurate the scans were he said not much better!

I am 31+3 and I checked my babies measurements against the graph in my maternity file. My measurements are right on the brink (90%) However, I'm sure I conceived a little before they think I did, plus I am 5'10'' and my DH is 6'6'' so I'm hoping a mixture of this means it won't be the size of a small sofa as I was hoping to have a home water birth.

thanks all was just a bit aware that docs kept bringing it up and doing scans but they weren't telling me what the implications were/are! You've all put my mind at rest that there basically are no implications. Thanks

I was admitted to hospital last week (at 36 weeks) as they did a scan and baby was measuring above the 99th centile (he was off the charts). I dont usually have big babies, but there is no sign of anything wrong (ie diabetes etc) so they sent me home, though I have to go back on monday and have been told they will probably do a section this week, if not, definately the week after (he is transverse so have to have a section anyway!) they have made it clear I will not be left to go to full term, and certainly not overdue!

My partners ex wife had a 12lb baby last time, and she delivered naturally, she said he was her easiest birth by far!
