+1 glucose in urine

What does this mean? When I was in hospital the other night they tested my urine and said it had glucose in it, this was the first time but I didn't get it tested at my last ante natal appointment which was 2 weeks ago.

The midwife at hospital said it could indicate gestational diabetes but nothing about what would happen next etc. Does anyone have any ideas or should I ask for more tests?

I feel all I've done is moan or bring worries onto here lately as I have a lot of stress going on in my life right now. I feel like I'm due some good luck!

hi, hope you're feeling better from the other night? at our hospital they get you to test your own urine from 26 weeks. on the leaflet it says that if the result is +1 of protein to either contact the hospital or your gp if shared care.

I am feeling quite a lot better thanks, no more pains or contractions which is great! I've been taking it easy and spending time on the sofa with the laptop making the most of the bad weather as we plan on taking the kids out lots once it clears up.

Hmm I have a midwife appointment in 2 weeks time, I've ordered some of the test strips so I can keep an eye myself in the mean time, I'm obsessive about things like that but I'm not sure that's a good thing!

My last 2 urine samples showed +1, they were tested by different midwives & the first test was taken at my consultants appointment. They all said nothing to worry about if just +1. If it gets higher then they'll do bloods etc.
Friend who had severe gestational diabetes with both her pregnancies said that +1 glucose can be purely to do with something you ate relatively recently & isn't an uncommon result in pregnancy.
So don't worry!

+1 can be from having ate recently or having gone ott on the sweets. Don't teast yourself all the time there is really no need and you'll only make yourself anxious, if the mw is not concerned trust her.

I had GD in 2 pregnancies but not in the last 2, +1 is not a huge biggie tbh.

Thank you both. Definitely wasn't anything I'd eaten, nothing sugary at all, don't really eat sweets/cake/chocolate etc. I've had a few symptoms too which is why I worried more and I'd actually looked it up earlier on!

Never had any glucose in my urine at all in my other 3 pregnancies and first time for this one. I'd just rather know if I had anything so I can deal with it rather than wait until 28 weeks which seems quite late to me. I have to go in for swabs and consultant appts around that time too (due to previous PE, prem birth and waters breaking at 22 weeks).

Had blurry vision, lost lots of weight for no reason (still not put it back on and I'm a size 8 normally), drinking lots and lots, weeing lots etc. I am a worrier though and I hate not knowing what's going on.

The GTT (test for diabetes) is at 28 weeks because the results are not accurate if done earlier - the way the body uses sugar and insulin is different in early pregnancy to any other time. So there isn't any point getting one done prior to 28 weeks. A +1 glucose on a stick is not clinically significant in pregnancy, pregnant women often spill a small amount of glucose. However your symptoms do sound like they may need to be checked out - I would visit the GP for a random blood sugar and also make sure you do have a GTT organised for 28weeks - your midwife will need to organise this for you.

Thanks, that makes sense to me. I'll mention it to my midwife at my next appt which is 2 weeks and see what happens. I can't drink the lucozade as I don't think it's vegetarian so I need to find something else to use as well for the GTT.

Thanks for all the advice.
