Had Early Scan Today -Bit Confused

Hi I went for an early scan today and am a bit confused by what the midwife said. I know I am probably being stupid and you wouldnt believe this is my fifth pregnancy and fourth child!BUT..

I am completely unsure when my last period was due to irregular bleeding I had been having a problem with. Got the scan and had to get an internal to get a proper look she said everything looks as it should, very healthy and baby is 5 weeks.

Now this is where I am confused (& probably stupid) I did my test 3 weeks ago and got a positive.

Any other time I have taken my pregnancy from the date of my last period so does this mean the baby is 5 weeks but I am 7 weeks pregnant or am I only 5 weeks pregnant?

~Sorry if I am being stupid

They will have said how pregnant you are so you will be 5 weeks pregnant.

Glad all is well xxx

SOunds like you are 5 weeks pregnant and your test was a very early positive - a week before your period would have been due.

I think... someone said on here that although you calculate your actual pg from your 'conception date' apparently the doctor and presumably midwife too, calculates it from your last PERIOD. So therefore you get an extra two weeks added to your idea of how pg you are...

I think that makes sense, although dont quote me on it

How exciting to have such an early scan, hope all goes well for you

Thanks everyone for your replies. Thats what I thought RoseNoir and thats whats confusing me. I had in my head by my rough dates I would be about 8 weeks, so I could easily be out by a week but find it odd I would be out by 3 weeks. Should have asked her to explain. I am back in 2 weeks so will ask for definate then, was just so relieved all looked well so far (complex history) I lost the ability to think

Early scans are also hard to accurately date the baby, I had an early scan when I thought I was 9wks pg, the sonographer measured me about 2 weeks less, but when I had my dating scan at what I thought was 12 weeks, the baby was only measuring 2 days less than I thought, so it had effectively caught up. The midwife who saw me after my 1st scan said this can happen, as like you I was surpirised he was saying I was almost 2 weeks less than I thought as I had an early positive too. It might have caught up by your 11-14 week dating scan.
