Pregnant with the contraceptive implant?

BSM897 · 15/07/2010 16:29

Hiya am a little confused and would be grateful for some advice. I?ve had the contraceptive implant in for 3 years now and its due out in August, it?s been great! Although a gained just over a stone, am convinced it?s down to the implant as I didn?t change my eating or exercise habits at all.

In the last few weeks I have been feeling really queasy (especially after eating), dizzy, headaches, needing to urinate more frequently, and the main one is feeling tired/exhausted. The last few weeks I have been completely shattered and last weekend I was so exhausted I slept on and off though the day and tasks like walking the dog was a real struggle! I even find myself becoming increasingly tired in work.

I?ve also gained 6lbs in 4 weeks!!! Again no change in eating or exercise habit. My tummy has become very bloated and swollen looking, I am a size 14 so I have a bit of a tummy anyway, but it has become more prominent and full looking. Also my belly button and area around it have become quite tender. My tummy feels very fluttery and strange, a feeling I can?t put my finger on.

I haven?t experienced tender breasts but I now have prominent blue veins in my breasts and they look swollen. I feel different and all these things are very out of character especially feeling exhausted. I did take cold and flu tablets for a few days because I was convinced I was coming down with something but it did nothing. My periods are a little haywire anyway because of the implant, my last full one was 28th may and lasted 6 days. Then on the 22nd June I had spotting (clumps ?sorry TMI) but have had no period.

I did a pregnancy test a few days ago, but it was negative, but I still feel all the symptoms and my friend said maybe am convincing myself that I am pregnant, is there a chance I could be or is it all in my mind?

I no its quite unlikely to become pregnant on the implant, but I read somewhere that if you are over a certain BMI you should have the implant out 3 months earlier, which is something I was never told! Does anybody know if this is true?

Sorry it?s so long I just feel a bit lost and need some advice! Thanks I have also posted this in the forum Pregnancy and Planning a baby.

PS. My boyfriend and I have unprotected sex so although I have the implant we use no other contraception.

I would make an appt with your gp and take a urine sample with you. Having had the implant myself, with a BMI of 22, I didn't have any issues with it and took it at the time because it had the least risk of getting pregnant. All the symptoms you have are very convincing of being pregnant. Best get the gp to test your urine for pregnancy just to be sure and if it's not they could maybe find out what it could be.
I would have thought it was all in your head until you mentioned weight gain and particularly large blue veins in your breasts which were the main symptoms for me. Best get it checked love. x

My tummy feels quite swollen and bloated today and i still feel most the symptoms but could also be a food allergy to something that could be causing the problem.

I have an appointment at 11:30 today with my GP, so hopefully will find out whats causing all this.

Thank you for your advice =D xx

i am 6ft 2 and weiged about 14 1/2 stone (which is fine for the height) i had an implant in and after bout 5 months then didnt have a period for 3 months - didnt think much of it cus aparantly that is possible until my stomach started getting stretchmarks - positive test but miscarried 2 days later - sure the implant made me miscarry - that was a few years ago wen i wanst redy for a baby anyway so i had it out straight away and went on other contraception i wouldnt trust it again i dont think its good for larger/big people like me - good luck

LauraKB · 16/07/2010 18:37

This is probably not helpful BSM but I had lots of symptoms and 2 negative tests. DD is now 8 months old tomorrow and is currently watching in the night garden.

3 weeks after the negative tests I still had the symptoms so I did another test (in the toilet at work on a Monday morning, not clever) and it was positive in a flash, so it is possible to get a false negative.

After having said that we weren't using any contraception, although my periods were all over the place hence the confusion re testing time.

Interested to hear how you got on today, hope you get the result you want, x.

I had my appointment with the doctors and she wasnt my normal doctor and didnt seem to know much about the implant! ( I had it fitted at the family planning clinic as my doctors can only remove it ). She felt my tummy but didnt say anything like yes you are or no your not. I thought she would have done a test whilst i was there but she didnt. She has now sent me to get blood tests done on tuesday so will have a result by the end of the week.

I have done 2 pregnancy tests and they were both negative but i still strongly feel the symptoms!! and my boyfriend said my boobs look diff and my tummy does! so confusing .

We dont use contraception either with the implant!!!

I shall let you know when i get the results of my blood tests =D

Thank you for both taking the time to comment Feliena and LauraKB =D xx

Goodness, I bet you are really wound up waiting for bloods and results!

Just to be clear, I didn't have an implant or anything, we were totally contraception free as we were 'not quite actively trying but conciously not preventing either' type thing, just thought I would give my experience of negative tests followed by positive test then DD!

I think she wouldn't be able to feel anything pregnancy related in your tummy until you were quite a few weeks on, but was mebe feeling to see if there was something else to explain symptoms.

FWIW my boobs were my first clue, they seemed to be huge straight away, but put it down to my imagination until they started to get sore which doesn't normally happen to me.

Good Luck for next week, will keep and eye out for your post, x.

BSM897 · 18/07/2010 15:39

Yeah bit annoying waiting for them! But least when they come i will hopefully know whats up with me.

Ahhh right lol sorry i misread it! we are hoping to do the 'not quite trying but conciously not preventing either' when i have the implant out =D.

How far along were you when your boobs starting to hurt? Mine dont hurt at all, not even a tiny bit!

I dunno whether am looking into it far too much maybe cause i do want a baby, but i have all these symptoms and have never had them before with the implant, or felt this strange before, my body feels really weird and my tummy feels strange to, but can't describe the sensation!.

I will update the post at the end of the week when i have the results! x

I was 5+4 when I found out (based on the dates I later got from scans) so probably about 5 weeks when boobs started to hurt. It was really what made me think I'd better take another test cos my boobs don't usually get sore, even in the run up to my period. They were just a bit tender to begin with but later became agony!

To play devils advocate your hormones might be all over the place with implant coming to the end of its usefulness and that might be causing the symptoms but I would have thought symptoms would be caused by more hormones rather than less. I'm no expert though.

Hope you get the result you want.

L, x.

Errrrrrmmm...I fell pregnant with my DS2 with the implant in. It would have been 2 weeks before I was due to get it removed that I fell pg with him. He's now 6.5yo.....They told me that it can become less reliable in the last 4 weeks before it was removed, and I should have been told to use other contraception for that time, as some people metabolise the implant ever so slightly quicker than the 'average'...

BSM897 · 19/07/2010 11:02

Yeah it probably is just my hormones playing about LauraKB. I cant wait to get this implant out now 9 days and counting lol.

I dont think they give enough information about the implant when you get it in, i've found myself looking on the interent over the last 3 years for some advice that was never given to me. Thanks for posting Loudlass

It annoying feeling like this and having no clue as to why am like this! I cant wait to get the results of my blood test now =D. xx

I had the implant for 3 years and took a few pregnancy tests as I was convinced I was pregnant- I had sore boobs, swollen tummy, felling sick etc. As the implant stopped my periods, that also added to the paranoia! I wasn't pregnant in the end, but in my experience the implant can definately 'trick' your body into thinking it's pregnant

BSM897 · 19/07/2010 16:28

I have heard it tricks your body. Its so strange how it does that!!

And the symptoms are so strong its realy hard to work out whether its a pregnancy or the implant playing havoc. Will know on friday hopefully!

Thanks for commenting rubbersoul x

I had my blood tests on tuesday, and rang the doctors today and they said they have them. The receptionist couldnt tell me but she has put it as urgent to the doctor and the doctor will ring me sometime today with my results!

Fingers crossed they come back clear as they were testing for ovary problems, tyroids etc (be nice if a was pregnant tho )

I started bleeding lightly on tuesday but only when i wiped (sorry) then yesterday i was on and off all day (between red and brown) then off today ! If it is the implant then how bloody annoying, cannot wait now till wednesday

Will update later with the results xx

BSM897 · 22/07/2010 15:35

Well the doctor rang and i got my results, she said am not pregnant but have a low B12 count, not serious tho and thankfully not anemic but just to keep and eye on it as it may be making me feel tired.

Although its come back as am not I still dont feel right My body is telling me otherwise but now it defo could just be the implant.

Am interest to know if anyone had a negative blood test but found out they were actually pregnant?

Or if anyone else got pregnant with the implant??

Thanks xxx

I didn't have any blood tests so don't really know, but I gather they are pretty accurate.

Sorry you're feeling a bit disappointed but once the implant is out it could happen anytime!

Hope you feel better soon, x.

BSM897 · 23/07/2010 10:50

My period has come properly today! ahwell like you said LauraKB it could happen anytime once its out! long forward to it!
