Flying - am I mad?

Me and the OH are thinking of getting away one last time before our first baby arrives. I will be 32/33 weeks and would be flying to Dubai (holiday of a lifetime sort of thing!).

The Dr says it is fine - but I was wondering if anyone has actually flown/been on holiday this late into the pregnancy .... am I mad? Or will it be fine?

Honest opinions please ..... thanks!!!

I couldn't do it, especially not that far and in economy. But then I've got SPD so would struggle in an economy seat now and also have high BMI (31) so might need heparin injections to fly long haul.

Make sure you've got really really good insurance.

How far along are you now?

I am emigrating in August and will therefore have to take a long haul flight of 11 hours. I will be 31 weeks then. My GP and MW has said that as long as you are healthy and you have had no complications with your pregnancy then there should be no problems. I am therefore not worried at all.

Just check with the airline that they will allow you to fly. All of them have different stipulations. Mine will allow you to fly up to 36 weeks but you need a doctors note from 28 weeks.

Do what you feel comfortable with and I agree with japhrimel make sure you have really good insurance.

I did 8 hour flight when about 34 (?) weeks pregnant. It was fine....but it was business class!

Not sure I would chose Dubai as a holiday at the best of times, let alone when pregnant. I hope you are going at a time of year when it won't be too hot! I lived in a very hot country when pregnant with dd1, it wasn't much fun.

How about going on holiday somewhere slightly closer to home and upgrading to business?

u will be fine i have flown in all my pregnancies even tho the last 1 i was only 16wks

The issue is with travel insurance; most airlines will allow you to fly up to 36 weeks but many travel insurers won't cover you past 28 weeks. If you find one that does, make sure they will also cover your baby if you happen to give birth early while you're away - as insurance may cover YOU but not the baby.

If you can find travel insurance, it's also worth getting a medical certificate from your doctor just before you fly saying how pregnant you are and that they consider you're fit to fly. Although airlines say they'll let you fly up to 36 weeks pregnant, this is discretionary so it helps to have as much back-up as possible!

Thanks everyone - I am going to get top of the range travel insurance yes! Makes me feel better than other people do it too though - I was in 2 minds whether to go but think I will now.

japhrimel - I'm 31 weeks now - will be 33/34 when I fly.

giagindi - I've called the Dr's and they've said it's fine I just need to let them know the dates. KLM (who we'd fly with) let you fly up to 36 weeks.

Okay, so how you feel now is probably a good indicator of how you'll feel then.

I live in Bahrain and at the moment it's unbearable hot - up to 50 degrees at lunchtime. It will only get worse in August which is when you're thinking of flying to Dubai.

It will be be to hot to lie by the pool/beach so you will be confined to Malls and indoor spaces. You may want to choose somewhere cooler - Oman is much milder at this time of year.
