time for travel potty + what are these pads/mats?

Potentially good start to potty training, now the next stage - leaving the house...Does anyone have an opinion between Potette and the Tommee Tippee one? Are they both equally portable and user friendly? Is there another make to consider? Also, what do you do in the car on a long journey, especially on the motorway and can't just stop to go in a travel potty, but what do they make of you saying 'It's okay, you're on a pad, you can just go where you're sitting'?! And finally, what are these pads and where do you get them? Sorry, still flailing in the dark a bit.

we tried a friends potette and she hated it as not really very stable at all.. ahve just ordered a 'my carry potty' which looks ideal! should arrive tomorrow so will update!

no idea about pads, we ahve ordered some that go in car seat/pushchair just in case of accidents, but wont be encouraging her to use them, just to protect car seat if needed!

I used a potette for ds and really liked it. We mainly used it as a trainer seat on toilets whilst out and about.

And with regard to pads for car seat, do you mean something like this.

If so I wouldn't encourage your dc to wee on it if they are anything like ds was. He used to do enormous wees and whilst it protected the car seat a little, it didn't exactly soak it all up!

Meant to say though, on a long journey of several hours we used to put an open nappy on the car seat just in case.

Thanks for helpful replies - regarding the 'accident pads' for seats, I think I just don't know how the conversation goes when they say they need to go and I know we can't stop, do you say 'we'll stop as soon as we can', knowing full well it won't be in time and they'll feel bad they couldn't hold it, or do you tell them realistically they just are going to have an accident??

When wouldn't you be able to stop? Can you avoid motorways? But I have seen many people on heard shoulder with kids on potty.... def not ideal though

To be honest we've just approached it by pretty much stopping at every second service station for a toilet break! If he did ask inbetween we just asked him to wait and we'd stop as soon as we can.

We have always been fine on long journeys because of the planned toilet stops. It was the 2 minute journeys that I didn't even give a thought to that used to catch us out!

I'm probably just anticipating the worst! The thing is we tend to go on the motorway because he gets really really travel sick if we don't, so it may be a choice between the two! That's also a lot of mess with very little warning and then he's really upset by the mess so maybe that's why I'm overly concerned about car travel...but hopefully with service station stops he will get better and better at holding. We've only just started so I actually don't know how long he can hold for if pushed, maybe it won't be as bad as I think. Trial by fire and a quick learning curve I expect - thanks for your replies.

Bit of a late reply, but thought I'd add my two pence worth !
One of my friends always used a "wee bottle" for her boys on long car journeys and out and about in general. It was just a wide necked plastic bottle (with lid, obviously!) that they could use if there was no access to a loo, or not enough time to get to one. Really portable, easily rinsed and also excellent fun from the toddler point of view.
I appreciate its not ideal if they're still quite young - risk of spillage etc- but if someone is in the back seat with them, could be a solution.
We have just started potty training DS 2.10 in earnest and have had great success so far with the bottle - he thinks it's great to stand in the footwell of the car in a car park and wee in his bottle !
The one we are using has still got an apple juice label on it....probably best if i remove it ASAP.....

Oh that's a great idea, will add that to my out and about list! Yes mine is 2.10 and I know he will give me a funny look and then think it's hilarious!

Has anybody ever found a travel potty taht doesn't need plastic bags?? We have the Potette Plus & it's great, but DH has pointed out that it's not great for travel in terms of having to take 60 bags away with us...

I never used a special travel potty, just kept a regular one in the car, plus tissues, wipes and nappy sacks

feedthegoat is right though - long journeys with planned stops were easier to handle than (eg) stucljk in traffic on way to tesco
