DS is 2.6mths old. Never done wee in potty, will sit on it only but thats it. On Sat he decided he wanted to wear pants (I had some in planning for potty training). He had a poo and wee within 30 mins of putting pants on got very very upset, many tears, cuddles etc and asked for his nappies again. So I thought he mustn't be ready yet so went back to nappies.

I'm worried i've done the wrong thing. He got so upset when he had the accidents and still talks about the 'mess' now. He even knows which pants he was wearing for what because when he saw me put them in hos draw he took them out again and said 'no mummy, dirty'. He's a very clean and tidy boy and hates mess or muck.

Wondering what to do now.

I'd carry on with nappies for the moment. Could you start with a gentle potty routine where he sits on it at regular intervals, such as on waking, after meals and morning and afternoon drinks, before bath and bed? After each the nappy goes back on between times. Perhaps suggest to him that doing his wees and poos in the potty is a very clean and tidy thing to do!

Eventually, something has to land in the pot, especially as there is no pressure about making a mess, and then you can go over the top with praise. Say nothing about an empty pot, or a used nappy if he is waiting until it goes back on. Hold off on wearing pants until he has got used to doing something in the potty and is confident with it. If he is in pants and won't do his wees and poos in a potty or loo, there will be a lot of mess and upset, and he still won't stop using nappies as a last resort.
