My daughter is just not getting it. She cries and begs for a nappy on and won’t use the potty. She has sat on it but won’t use it. She’s 3 in November. I have bought everything - books, stickers that change when you wee on them, rewards chart. She just can’t seem to manage that first wee on the potty! I think once she’s done that she will be fine. I’m just worried because I don’t want to scare her but to have swimming lessons she needs to be potty trained and also for school. Any tips or tricks? I feel so sorry for her as she absolutely sobs and begs for a nappy to do a wee. She is also telling me when she poos and takes herself off to a corner so I think she is most certainly ready. We are going to Spain next week so was going to try when we get back for continuity. Any help will be appreciated! Thankyou xxx

I had to go back to basics as my DD went completely anti-potty and she would cry whenever we even talked about the potty.
We started by ignoring the potty and talking about wearing big girl pants.
Have you tried leaving the nappy off for long periods and trying her in pants, what happens when she then needs the toilet?

We also brought a brand new potty eventually and let her pick it. You could even skip the potty and buy the toddler toilet seat, we have the fold up one with steps and my DD was very excited about it.

We started by praising her even if she mentioned the potty, and then we praised her for sitting on it. We had to take baby steps before even managing a wee on the potty.

Is your Daughter at nursery, what helped us in the end was seeing the other kids use the toilets and she because curious.

Don't lose hope, I stressed out because my daughter started sitting on the potty just fine and then all of a sudden started to cry every time she saw it and I thought we would never get there and now she is completely toilet trained. We didn't use the potty for long either, we use the toilet all the time now so maybe skip the potty and try a toilet seat and see how you get on.

I think it helped my daughter when I stopped stressing about it and gave her a little break and went to basics and praised for even just sitting on her potty fully clothed.

Hi. Has she ever had an accident /wet herself when you’ve been training? I think even just a wee anywhere that’s not in a nappy is a good start and praise her for letting it out. I’m a childminder and had a girl like this. Once she had done a wee without the nappy it was fine. Think we were out in the garden at the time. Lots of distractions to get her to just wet herself and see that nothing bad had happened. She was horrified at the mess and had hardly any accidents after. Mum had done all the putting a nappy across the potty etc and that didn’t work. Maybe I’m old fashioned but it’s just perseverance with most children. And making no plans for a week (I remember taking a week off work for each of my boys) so that you focus on your child and nothing else.

We went and bought some pants and made it all exciting so she could choose which ones she wanted. Then I left her with a nappy off and placed the potty on the floor where she requested it. She wouldn’t even wee and that’s when she starts crying and begging me to put her a nappy on. In the summer playing outside she didn’t have one on and was just having a wee on the grass in the garden and was fine with that. It’s exactly like you mentioned as soon as the potty is even brought up it’s a massive issue for her. Some good ideas on here though so I will certainly try! Thankyou! She is at nursery yes and most of her class is potty trained apart from just a couple of kids. She’s my first and I am totally new to all this so don’t know what to do for the best! I feel I have family members saying ‘she should be out of nappies by now’ it makes me feel like I’m failing and also that she’s behind 🥺🤦🏻‍♀️. I know every child is different but it’s such a battle at the moment xxx
