Toddler refuses to poop in potty or nappy!

Hi all
We started potty training around 10 days ago. The first three days or so, our toddler (boy) seemed really interested and had more on target than accidents which we thought was unusual but we'reeof course happy about it. He's 2 years 3 months and we discovered great things like he wees every 2-3 hours, we've managed supermarket and park trips without accidents. Lots of wins to be honest.
I was adviced by nursery to still have him on nappies for his long afternoon nap and bedtime and it's worked well for a gentle transition.
In recent days, he started refusing to wear a nappy and even asking for his pants. I wanted to let him poo in his nappy for a while but he started to refuse wearing them to poo which has him constipated, scared and in apparent pain. He's a stubborn child, very sweet and well behaved, but loves doing his own thing.
I am completely lost as I don't want him to suffer, but he wants to keep trying for #2 without nappies. This has only led to by-the-potty poo accidents or constipation.
Any advice would be great, please. I would like to break this pattern of behaviour. 😪

Why on earth did you decide to not use the potty for poos?! How confusing! Have some faith in him and support him learning this new skill.

He does sound like he's now constipated. That will make him sore, grumpy and in pain, so go to the doctors and get movicol to help things move along again.

I was probably unclear on that. I meant to say I was willing to let him poo in a nappy at first if that's what he needed not to be scared. I do agree it's caused confusion, but we are working on fixing that

Say the nappy fairy’s have come and took the nappies for the other babies? Some glitter in the potty to make a “glittery poo” for the fairies if something to come get? Amazon have a book called “come out and Poo” which helped my 2 year old understand going to the toilet for poos.

my little one didn’t like it and was reluctant to poo on potty. Prune pouches helped to stop any constipation, she knew the prize was a chocolate button and managed to do it!
