Obvs all autistic kids are different my autistic child was deffo dryer sooner than my ND child but used to freak out at pooing in a toilet so had to potty train first - then toilet.

I didn’t train any of my 4 children. They were all dry day and night between the ages of 2.5 and 3.5 (3.5 complex needs) They genuinely did all just decide to use the toilet themselves.

@newmommy2006yayoh I wasn’t boasting, sorry if it came across that way! Hadn’t read the whole thread and saw a few people saying it was already too late. I remember some people being quite horrible to me when I wasn’t whipping out potties at play dates every five minutes. I was a young mum the first time and I cared a lot what people thought. Not so much by #4. I’m not saying I did it the right way at all, I was just trying to make the op feel better.

DemBonesDemBones · 04/10/2026 19:03

And just realised you ARE the op 🤦‍♀️ I don’t even drink, can I blame it on the mentioned 4 kids?! 😆

Started with both of mine between 1 & 2. DD was 100% dry by 2. DS was day dry by 2 1/2. 3 is late.

Ok, see you didn’t say that in any of your previous posts or when I asked about it the first time, which is why I was dubious. I can only go by the information you give.

@Ileithyia@Jan24680@bafta16@SalmonOnFinnCrisp@saltedlime to to honest I'm honestly thinking about waiting a while she hasn't been dry once and I might as well give up and I don't believe in already nesting I honestly think my daughter has some issues what feeling when she needs to go because she never tells me when she needs to go and she doesn't seem to know when she's going

Ok so with my ASD son I tried at 2 because he could communicate and seemed aware I tried absolutely everything and it was horrendous I can’t even explain. I ended up putting him back in nappies (everyone told me not to) and he was given control back about it which turned out was the issue. So it was all up to him. Then around 3.5 he would choose to use the toilet when he wanted to.
All fine by school.
Autistic kids are often wired very differently.
If she sees you going she might occasionally start trying herself and in time will do it reliably enough you can ditch nappies.

People get really funny about potty training but as long as it’s done by school which is at least 4, who cares? And if she isnt done by school it’ll be because her body can’t do it, which is more common in autistic children and nothing you can change.

It's not being "funny". It's called parenting.

Gothwife · 05/10/2026 08:20

Sorry but you are very late! We started before 2 with both of ours. We also have a 3 year age gap so only had 1 in nappies at a time. Get on it asap!
