I kinda need help with this sorry I have a new kiddo coming and I don't want to being changing 2 sets of diapers

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I've been a supply TA in numerous SEN reception classes, I think one kid was toilet trained and I had to go with them to the toilet.

if she isn't "producing" dry nappies you may struggle. I think you can't teach a child to "mature" and wee less often. I am potty training my just turned 2 year old and he only wees 3 or 4 times a day (and a lot at night) no messes on the floor today, yay!

That said the book is correct the earlier you start the earlier they are potty trained. I'd take the book with a pinch of salt, my sanity needs to leave the house and for him to go to nursery. Good luck.

Don't give up? it's boring but worth it.

@caringcarerlucky lol

It’s really not luck! The ‘wait until they are ready’ idea is a marketing ploy from disposable nappy manufacturers. The longer they are in nappies, the more money they make, it’s cynical but true. Back in the days of Terry squares etc all children were out of nappies around two years of age, there are various ways, but it’s absolutely possible. At two years old they can understand simple explanations and instructions. Talk to her, show her, motivate her. Either sit her on a potty regularly, or take her to the toilet, narrate what you’re doing when you go to the toilet, go together; her on the potty, you on the toilet, make it interesting, but don’t make it stressful. Reward any wee or poo done on the potty/toilet with praise, and react to accidents with ‘oh well, next time!’

But no, out of nappies at two is not luck!

What? 3 years old is too late not too soon!

We wore Terry nappies growing up and were potty trained by 2. My cousin saw us in pants and using a potty and wanted the same. I am
not sure any of my son's 2 year old nursery class are potty trained. I am going to ask about it on Tuesday, wish me luck!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 27/09/2026 13:44

My DD was trained at 25m and was reliably and fully trained within 7 days. I had DS when she was 23m so I was motivated....

With my DS i was less motivated and started at 2.5yrs (30m) and fully trained at 31m. He was harder / took longer to "get it"

Mycarry potty and loose pants like joggers for day 1-4 when in the home.then fitted leggings post that (it contains the 💩).

Agree with PPs the "readiness" thing is pure BS invented by pampers... but some level of communication is helpful. If I am v honest with myself there was a window where my son was very aware of poos and wees at about 16m but I couldn't face trying to train as I was having major organ surgery while trying to interview and change jobs AND raise a 3 and 1 yr old....

saltedlime · 27/09/2026 13:56

DS1 is autistic and was potty trained at 3. We tried when he had just turned 3, a couple months after his baby brother was born, and he was very resistant. He’d leap off the potty immediately when we put him on it. Reward charts didn’t work. So we left it for a couple months but still kept the potty out. One day he went over and did a wee himself, we cheered, he was so proud and cracked it from there. Good luck with it, OP!

@Ileithyia@Jan24680@bafta16@SalmonOnFinnCrisp@saltedlime to to honest I'm honestly thinking about waiting a while she hasn't been dry once and I might as well give up and I don't believe in already nesting I honestly think my daughter has some issues what feeling when she needs to go because she never tells me when she needs to go and she doesn't seem to know when she's going

My child was just three (and ASD although not diagnosed until later). It went well. Took a while to poo on the toilet but was quick to pick up weeing in the potty then the toilet.

@newmommy2006yayThe reason she doesn’t recognise the need to go is because the nappy wearing is stopping her making the connection between the sensation and then weeing! The ‘stay dry’ technology of disposable nappies means she’s getting no feedback to actually realise what’s going on.

It’s a shame you didn’t start this when the weather was warmer, letting toddlers mooch around bare-bummed in the garden helps them figure out what’s going on when it comes to toileting. If you want her to realise when she’s done a wee, but don’t want accidents all over the house, put a pair of cotton knickers on inside her happy, she’ll feel that she’s wet, and you can talk about it and it’ll help her figure it out. At almost 3 she really is old enough to get this.

Boreded · 27/09/2026 16:57

I was always under the impression that they should be potty trained by their third birthday (as a general rule but obviously all kids are different) as this is when they start going to nursery school

newmommy2006yay · 27/09/2026 17:00

I might have to do this the last few nights we've been nappies only at bed other than that she's been naked but honestly we have some stuff to do this week so I might just get some knickers and do the metadata you told me to trend because honestly I'm starting to feel sick of this house @Ileithyia

OP posts:
newmommy2006yay · 27/09/2026 17:03

@Boreded we have a nursery school that she got into that excepts people with autism and they said if she isn't trained by the time she goes in it's fine we can work on it at home and in school so I'm not overly worried

Yeah I mean of course they can’t change her, I just think that it’s generally the rule of thumb that they are trained when they go.

Definitely old enough for you to get her doing it

Ah that’s a shame. Will they be able to give any treatment options?

I will say I know absolutely nothing about it, but an old colleague of mine had issues with bladder control and had Botox treatments on it.

Have they signposted you to anything that could help 💐

There little thay can do for mussels that won't work on a child so young thay said when she's 5 she'll be able for the free nappies so she'll most likely be in nappies for life I am like sobbing so hard

Don’t worry you’ve got a while until she starts school so there’s time to get this sorted then do potty training. Has the doctors suggested any treatment?

There’s things that can be done like exercises and also just better control as she gets older, but it may be that she has to wait until a bit older as 3 is still young.

I hope it's the case i don't want to be changing nappies for years

As she gets older if she’s in pull ups she’ll be able to change the wee nappies herself. My 6 year old dd is still in night nappies (ASD) and she puts them on and off herself now.
