Nearly four year old having toileting accidents only at new nursery school setting

Hi... I'm looking for some advice. My 3 year old started potty training 18 months ago and we are currently facing a new challenge. We started training at 2 years and 2 months and it took us just under 12 months for us to feel he was 'potty trained'. There have of course been a few accidents since then (eg. being distracted and forgetting... or it going all over the floor by leaving it too late etc) but he had a regression after Christmas which we are struggling to recover from.

In September he started going to nursery at the School he will be attending in September this year. We decided to start him off on a couple of days in the new setting to transition him in. He is at another nursery the other three days where he has been since he was one. I was initially concerned at how his toileting would go in the new setting but was pleasently suprised with no accidents until he returned after October half term. After October half term he had a bad couple of days in the setting but returned to normal fast and was fine leading up to Christmas. After Christmas it went downhill and we've not recovered since. He had a terrible couple of days in the setting and then went downhill at home for a few days. He got back on track at home quickly, was fine at his normal nursery but the school nursery setting is now a challenge every week. Every Thursday/Friday he comes home with bags of wet/soiled clothes after being at the school nursery setting.

We have tried:

  • talking to him about whats happening to understand if he's scared or doesnt know where to go - he says he just doesnt know why it happens or says he was just playing and he couldn't hold it
  • taking him in and asking him to show me where the toilet is, how to use it etc
  • reward stickers/chart at home for success at the end of the day
  • reward stickers at school given by the teachers throughout the day
  • asking the teachers to remind him
  • asking the teachers to take him to the toilet at intervals
But we are stuck! I've got a meeting booked in with the school but looking for ideas or perhaps just some solidarity in advance. I'm also going to speak to his other nursery to see how they manage him there. He is very much a 'leave it till the last minute boy!'. He turns 4 in August and am concerned he'll be there 5 days a week in September and worried how he'll manage.

I am worrying too much at this stage... or is there more I can do to help??? 🫣

Thanks in advance. I've really struggled with the whole potty training journey x

12 months is a long time to potty train I’d say he’s still getting the hang of it! My youngest was around this age when I was confident he was ok so try not to stress too much! First was two, pre-verbal, autistic but took around a week!
