Toddler has sudden fear of potty/toilet

Hi all, just looking for some tips or if anyone has had a similar experience.

My 19 month old DD has shown an interest in the toilet for a few months now and has been telling us when she pood etc. We got her a potty and read some stories and she took to it brilliantly. She had 3 wees the first day we properly gave it a go and each time she was super upset when she saw the wee in the potty. The last one she had was a full proper wee and she was crying so much when she saw it! This was after sitting quite happily on the potty chatting away to us. Since then she has refused to use it and we’re back to nappies.

We’ve tried a little seat on the toilet which she’s recently rejected too. She is pulling at her nappy so obviously knows when she’s been but I feel like it’s a huge step backwards.

I should add that we had no intention of potty training this young, we have just taken her lead with it. But I’m scared we miss the boat after this blip or she develops a prolonged fear of using the toilet. She’s quite a sensitive little soul!

Any tips greatly appreciated!

My little girl was similar that age, she was inquisitive about it all and wanted to go to the bathroom with me but she didn’t really understand it.She just knew she wanted changed when she was wet.

I think I would probably give it a break and let her come back to it in a little while which is okay! Every child learns at their own speed, she’s shown interest which is great but now shows she’s not fully understanding it all.

I would go back to the stage of when she knows she’s wet or dirty and wants changed, then change her in the bathroom, then wash hands with her. Chat through the process and say when she’s ready she can try the big girl toilet.

@Lostworlds thanks very much for the reply. I think you’re right, we’re just following her lead and I’m sure she’ll come back to it when she’s ready.
