I started potty training 2 months ago when DS was 2.5. We went for the no pants, staying at home method and it went really well. Nappies at night only. He was dry overnight and using the potty when prompted, but sometimes independently. After a week we started going out with pants and it went well, a few accidents but not constantly. Then he took a dip and we went back to taking him to the potty at regular intervals, and that’s where we still are weeks and weeks on.
He can have as many as 5 changes of clothes a day and pretty much every poo is in pants. I know the signs when he needs a poo and will say ‘I think you need a poo’ or similar, then take him to the potty. Sometimes he will do a poo but most of the time he is not doing anything and then pooing his pants 5 mins later. He doesn’t seem bothered at all when he does it and doesn’t even tell us it’s happened. He’s very verbal and able to explain himself, understand what we say etc but he’s just not fussed. He says he likes pooing in his pants!
We have tried a reward chart, and even giving a treat when he used the potty (which I was loathe to do) but nothing has worked. We’ve started showering him every time he has a poo accident as he doesn’t enjoy this much but it’s not really sustainable! This afternoon I’ve just had enough and put him in a nappy.
Is he just not ready? We are due DD in 8 weeks and I really wanted him out of nappies but maybe I should get over that.
