Fix for trousers so that DS can do them himself but they don’t fall down

DS is 3, tall and skinny. We’ve always had an issue with trousers that are too loose but have just about managed by selecting brands very and knotting the drawstring very tight. Without a nappy though everything falls down unless drawstrings are pulled super tight.
The problem is that he can’t knot/untie drawstrings on his own but any elasticted waists are always too loose.
Does anyone have any brilliant fixes for this (Velcro? Clips?) or am I kidding myself and I’m going to have to sew elastic into all his trousers?

Try leggings from the ‘girls’ section they tend to be a tighter fit. I have the falling down issue whenever i put the girls in joggers but not in leggings.

Girls trousers tend to be cut skinnier? Even tracksuit bottoms. Had to buy boys trousers for my daughter at that age as the trousers were cut so narrow.

Have you tried the trousers with the adjustable waist bands? H&M have them (amongst other places) where you pull the band and button it into place. DS is so skinny that he's still on the same button that I put him on almost a year ago and these type of trousers work great for him

Slit the waistband. Knot the elastic inside..

Primark basic joggers are excellent for staying up - the waists are genuinely elastic, by contrast with ones from H&M and Sainsbury's, which look stretchy but barely are.

Another vote for leggings. DS 4 is super slim but tall for his age. He much prefers leggings and hates the feeling of his trousers falling down. H&M do some fleece lined ones that feel more like a jogger. Lindex also have some great ones. He just looks like he’s wearing skinny cut trousers.

Fold the waistband over

H&M make elastic belts so they don’t need to be unfastened to pull down trousers but it keeps them up. Most toddler clothes have adjustable waists though. H&M make good clothes for tall and thin kids, maybe it’s just a case of trying a different shop.

Poppers and a popper gun - use the popper to nip the waist in just enough that they don't fall down but that the elasticity of the waistband means he can still pull them down.

I have the same problem with my 4 year old but he's not tall. I buy girls plain jeans which are narrower. I also sometimes cut open the waistband and put elastic in which has been great.

I'd get girls treggings from H&M.

Go retro: braces.

Next do skinny joggers in the girls section. Also next and M&S do chinos etc with elastic in that you can pull tight with different button holes. Next also do longer length in some styles of kids trousers and leggings that might help to get the smaller waist.

Snake belt? Ds wore them for years when he was little.

My ds is a bit older (nearly 7) but he’s been wearing belts since he turned 5. They are magnetic ones instead of the usual buckle and he can pop them open easily

Some brilliant suggestions here, thank you! I’m going to go through them all now. An elastic belt and swapping drawstrings for elastic sound especially good.

DS is resistant to leggings as he thinks they’re pjs and we already have girls joggers but I’ll investigate the specific styles mentioned. We have brand recommended for tall slim kids (H&M, primark, Vertbaudet etc) he’s just very very slender with long legs that we have to size up for.

I find these belts great for my DD. No clip to do every time so the dexterity isn’t needed.

Ideally we’d use our existing wardrobe, so I think tomorrow I’ll try knotting an elastic waistband and swapping a cord drawstring for some elastic and knotting it.
Then look into the various belt/toggle options which look good too. We have braces but he’s always refused to wear them (though he’s quite keen on blippi at the moment so maybe it’s worth another try).

Shorts!!! Be OK inside at any rate.
And if you are my youngest, ok outside as well...
