Potty training

3yo refusing to use potty or toilet

If I ask my 3yo whether he needs a wee he always says no. When I put him on the potty or toilet he sits there happily but won’t do anything. If I tell him to do a wee on the toilet he yells no no no! So I put his trousers back on and he wees five minutes later. Occasionally he tells me there’s water on the floor but other times he just carries on playing in his wet clothes.

I’ve tried offering him sweets to do a wee. I’ve tried miming a toy doing a wee. I’ve done a wee myself and explained to him what I’m doing. I’ve tried getting him to blow raspberries or laugh to relax his bladder. I’ve tried distracting him with my phone. I’ve made psss noises, run the tap, put his hand in water, poured water on his crotch - nothing.

How do I make him do something on the toilet?! I can’t potty train him if he point blank refuses to go.

I found chocolate buttons for wees and ice creams for Poohs worked well. Guess which one my little one cracked first?

I've actually nearly been in tears today over this. People are saying put it off etc but hes 3.3 its getting stupid. Hes sat on the potty about 6 times no produce. As soon as we went out he soaked the nappy same when he went to bed. Hes drinking lots. I cant keep putting it off. Hes going to be 4 at this rate

@BLTLover Oh no it’s frustrating isn’t it. Is your health visitor available to chat to for advice or have you tried that? I don’t know what else to suggest as I have been told to try all kinds of things but none of them work. It’s bloody annoying when you know full well your child understands but won’t follow through. I haven’t tried with my little one for a while as I’m ill and really can’t do with the fight but hoping that when he goes back to nursery(not school nursery) that they will work with me. Chin up this can’t go on forever x

Well my little one was trained at 2 years and 9 months and dry at night shortly after- no accidents at all from that date. At 3 he’s now going through a regression, so even when you think you’ve got it cracked they regress. I think they get there at different times. Perhaps see it as a milestone that they reach at different times?

Honestly? He's not ready. My son is 4 in feb and only cracked toilet training in October. Once he decided he was ready, 3 days training and he's been dry since. It was the exact same
With my daughter, but she was younger. You cannot make them do it, it's stressful and can set them back further. I'd honestly leave it and go back to it x

My DD3.5 has point blank refused to sit on any potty or toilet seat at home. We couldn’t even start potty training as we could not get over the first hurdle. (She does have SEN, before I get jumped on.)

We finally cracked it over Christmas by buying her a potty that looks like a mini toilet with a flush and a pouch for tissues/wipes. She feels so grown up using her own toilet. If I’d have know that it would have made a difference, I’d have got one months ago 😅

Don't stress, it is normal. I spent a whole year trying to potty train my first DD, she was still only dry when she was ready at 3 y 4m, my second DD I tried intermittently without any stress or bother, read the potty books, offered her to try when I went (no, no, no!) Then at 3y 5ms she just got it, over one weekend straight to toilet, she was in nursery in nappies on the Friday and dry all day in pants on the Tuesday. When they're ready they're ready.

@BLTLover we trained entirely in pull ups. Changed pull up when it was wet. No wees on couch. I read about resistance to potty. An article suggested putting pull up on and leaving him to it, that kid will want to pee on pottyfir attention if you don’t say anything. Lo and behold he did. Could give it a try?

Actually yesterday I put him on the potty 5 times with nothing but when he actually went he did it himself

Oh Crap! Method is the best. No messing around, no waiting for 'readiness' which is mostly a load of rubbish

Report
Fatas · 13/01/2021 18:36

@shotofchips no its not the best, its the method that tends to be in vogue at the moment. But there's many methods that work for some and not for others-- horses for courses.

@shotofchips that’s your opinion of course. But it’s certainly not the best for everyone, I know a lot of people it didn’t work for
