Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Omg the poo stories sound really traumatic!! Stay strong everyone.

Indecisivelurcher · 28/04/2020 18:57

😱😱😱

TwistyHair · 29/04/2020 08:08

Oh dear, poo cheese!

moimichme · 29/04/2020 09:08

Hi all, my sympathies - we tried with ds late last summer at 28 months and it didn't work, he was getting stressed and scared of the toilet, so we packed it in. Decided to try bare bum when the weather warmed up this spring. But he hated the feel of poo in his nappies so has been going (most of the time) on soft toilet child seat for several months. So we're the opposite of most of you, I think!

We have nearly cracked wee on the potty/toilet (1-2 small accidents per day) but he's 3 so I think he's been good and ready for a while now. We'll see what happens when we go out for a walk today...

Good luck all! Slowly but surely.

TwistyHair · 29/04/2020 09:10

I dreamt about poo last night. Asked daughter and she doesn’t want to do a poo in nappies or pants. She does want to do them in toilet. Fingers crossed for today

babycornplease · 29/04/2020 09:31

@TwistyHair dreaming about poo? You've finally cracked my lovely! Grin

Indecisivelurcher · 29/04/2020 09:36

Dry day here yesterday, including 2 poops on the potty which we waved off to poo land with much fanfair!

Caz1412 · 29/04/2020 12:25

We have had two dry days, back to normal again, he asks to go for a wee again or will just use potty himself if he is bare bummed.
Turns out we had such a bad weekend because he is sooo stubborn! And I kept asking him/prompting if he needed to go and would say no and wee wherever he was. He just wanted to be left alone. I got abit obsessed and I was even annoying myself with how much I was bugging him!

Left him alone, stopped talking about the potty altogether and sat down and played together all day yesterday and he did the usual and just took himself to the potty when he needed it.

I’m feeling pretty guilty for causing him the issues all weekend because I was so worried. 🤦🏻‍♀️

TwistyHair · 29/04/2020 12:32

@babycornplease it was so realistic too! Still no poo today. She’s holding again. But is now doing wees on the big toilet seat rather than the kids one. So that’s good news for when we’re out and about (one day)

TwistyHair · 29/04/2020 12:32

Sounds like everyone else is doing well.

Hellohello2020 · 29/04/2020 16:21

On Monday my dh tried to keep DD in pants but....I don't think he took her to the potty early enough as she did a big morning wee on the floor then was upset and said wee nappy. He took that to mean she doesn't know when she's weeing so as he's the primary caregiver atm, she's back in nappies. Still doing most her business in the potty. Dry this morning and did a big wee in the potty, but her last wee was 430. 15 hours between wees! one nappy wee today. I wouldn't mind except my DD hates me putting her nappy on, is ok once on....

fascinated · 29/04/2020 17:51

Interesting. Starting to be able to hold it longer, which makes it a little more complicated in that sometimes he says he needs toilet but then gets distracted and won’t just go! Previously he was keen to rush there. Think novelty has worn off.

I haven’t looked at the Oh Crap book after Block 1 as it’s been going reasonably well... might have a gander at her view on later stages.

fascinated · 29/04/2020 17:53

Hellohello — my humble opinion would be to try nowt to mix and match nappies and not. Other than nights. I feel it is confusing and sends out a message to the child that you don’t have confidence in them. Do you think your OH isn’t fully on board? Sounds a bit like it... worth discussing it?

fascinated · 30/04/2020 13:02

Sorry, not (typo)

SuddenArborealStop · 30/04/2020 15:30

Started his poo in his nap nappy, better than the neighbours garden I suppose Grin

TwistyHair · 30/04/2020 18:04

Oh my god. She’s been on and off the toilet needing a poo for two hours. It’s been three days. I thought it was coming and she said it was but she looked so terrified looking down between her legs. Like the most scared I’ve ever seen her. Wide eyes and shaking and crying. So we’ve put a nappy on. Really worried she’s gonna hold it and get constipated. This is so stressful. And fucking annoying.

TwistyHair · 30/04/2020 18:04

She doesn’t want a nappy on.

fascinated · 30/04/2020 19:35

Twisty, what a shame! Hope you got a result....

Goostacean · 30/04/2020 19:49

Twisty this might sound weird but have you tried doing a poo in front of her? Don’t have to answer! But I’m not joking. I think that’s what I’d try next; talking about how it feels, that my tummy will feel better, it doesn’t hurt, the poo will be happy to float to poo-land, show her the results, let her flush it etc. Sorry, I know that’s gross but I wonder if it’s fear of the unknown? You don’t want her to get constipated and for it to hurt or it’ll be a vicious cycle, I’d guess... So stressful, sorry to hear it!

Kle209 · 30/04/2020 19:56

@TwistyHair it’s so hard isn’t it?! I tried putting a nappy in a potty so they get the feeling of a nappy but aren’t actually wearing one. It worked one time for us at least! Did you get a poo before bedtime?

I had a lovely day of no poo today or poo dance, though yesterday he missed the potty again. Urgh. He seems to like to poo standing up but not over the potty. The poo dropped before I could get him to the potty. I guess we can count it as half a win coz he was back and forth to the potty and so was close to the potty/loo when he went...

If any one has any ideas on how we can persuade him to sit down to poo, I’d be grateful!

LunaHardy · 30/04/2020 20:07

@twistyhair I can empathise. We've had a couple of poops on the potty but my god they have been hard work. Do you leave her alone to do it? The only time my dd will do it is if I leave her alone in the bathroom. I said to her the other day "I'm going to tidy your clothes away I will be in your room, tell mummy when you're done." She kept checking I was still in her room before she did anything, then I heard her moving around and she was trying to tip it down the loo before I could see it. That was the first time I'd actually seen a poo in the potty and I really made a big fuss about how well she did etc but that was 3 days ago now 🤷🏻‍♀️ she normally goes once a day or every other at the most so she is definitely holding it.

TwistyHair · 30/04/2020 20:10

She did one!!!! Not in nappy. She didn’t want to do it in nappy. She had bubbles to blow to keep her on the toilet. She was so scared though saying ‘it’s really big, it’s coming’ and crying and putting her face in her hands. She went up there about 12 times before she did it. Part of the problem is that she looks between her legs and sees it come out. Which must look pretty weird.

@Goostacean we’ve done all of that. Pooing in front of her, my four year old pooing in front of her, husband, dollies, teddies, poo gone to pooland, little mole book, pirate Pete, flushing the loo etc all on repeat. My new technique might be just to not mention poo again at all. Maybe I’m doing that thing of going on about it too much in a stupid ‘upbeat’ voice.

@kle209 I have no ideas. I’m all out of ideas. I guess you just have to be super on it while he’s doing they poo dance.

How are others doing? @babycornplease @Caz1412 and some others I’ve forgotten the names of

TwistyHair · 30/04/2020 20:11

@LunaHardy I’ve tried that too. My other child has always wanted to be on his own. Right from beginning. But she doesn’t.

TwistyHair · 30/04/2020 20:12

That’s so sweet she tries to put it down the loo.

babycornplease · 30/04/2020 20:27

We had two wee accidents today. Annoyingly. One in the park, and one in the garden, which she had just done big wees in the potty beforehand so goodness knows that was going on there...
And one near poo accident, I'd built her a den due to the shitty weather, complete with rugs etc, and she was having a teddy bears picnic... thank god I now recognise the signs, or I would have had to bin a lot of stuff!
Anyone else breathe a sigh of relief at bedtime when it's time to put the nappy on? Or is that just me??
