Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Feel like we have made some progress, didn't manage to catch any wees on the potty unfortunately (in the garden) but we managed to slightly restrain him on the potty then used duggee on the phone (is that really bad?!) to keep him there and he did 2 potty poos!! So feel he's hopefully less scared now

Joywillcomeagain · 26/04/2020 17:29

I've kept score today it's 3:2 to dd so 3 accidents and 2 pees on the potty.

I'm starting to feel stupidly jealous of people with the reluctant pooers. My dd will just let them slip out anywhere. She's not bothered at all. She usually squirms so I catch them but this morning she did another on the bathroom floor while I was showering Sad.
My mom has been amazing at keeping me going. This thread is brill also. Well done everyone for keeping going!!

Big accident apparently on DH’s watch... he said he needed the toilet, but noticed sth en route there he wanted to play with. So interested that DH thought it was a false alarm and let him play. Nope. Lol!

TwistyHair · 26/04/2020 17:50

God it’s so up and down! That’s so annoying @Kle209

@joywill. I get what you mean. You’d rather she care about where her poo goes.

Sorry to dampen it for everyone but we had a successful poo in toilet. Lots of back and forth saying she needed a poo but it was too scary. Then she did one and she burst into tears saying she was scared. She could see it coming out and cried the entire time coz she was so scared.

Indecisivelurcher · 26/04/2020 18:09

@twistyhair I can't remember whether you have done the whole poo goes to pooland book? Could be worth a try! Alexa also does a song about everyone's gotta go poo poo!

For what it's worth I think that poos are harder to crack than wees. Wees you just sit on and it happens. Poos take more brewing, sitting and waiting, and interaction to make it happen!

My ds is struggling a bit with the psychology of poos too, he seems to hop between the 2 potty and the loo thinking that will help! Then pulled down his pants a little bit later and a very round poo fell out onto the floor!!! Was quite funny! And mercifully easy to clean up!

Kle209 · 26/04/2020 18:12

@twistyhair it’s rubbish that she was so upset by it, but fantastic that she did it!! Hopefully now she’s done it, the next time won’t be so scary!

babycornplease · 26/04/2020 18:16

We've had a totally dry day today! She actually asked for her potty when we were outside as I'd forgotten to take it out with us, and she held it in whilst I ran inside to get it... I'll take that as a win.

I've noticed that she's not dry after nap time anymore though, always has a wee in her nappy whereas she didn't before...

We've had no poo today... I am wondering whether I can risk leaving her for five mins in her booster to run her bath really quickly... this won't end well, will it?!

Can't remember who it was who was talking about the training pants... so far they've proved a colossal waste of money, I've put them on her for the park, but she's not needed a wee in the 45 mins it took us there and back... maybe when things are back to normal they'll be more useful

babycornplease · 26/04/2020 18:21

Awww, well done little twisty hair, but bless her for being scared 😟 what about princess polly? The book has a cheer button, and there is a sticker version as well and a cartoon on YouTube. That's probably been mentioned several times on this thread already, possibly by me, so sorry if it has! Brain is fried with trying to cram all work into her nap times.

Dd couldn't care less where her poo goes when she does deign to do them in the potty, I made a huge deal of taking the potty upstairs and going to wave bye bye to mr poo poo, but by the time we had all got upstairs, me, dd, and the poo, she'd lost interest... at least the dog showed some interest probably thought it was some sort of new delicious snack

TwistyHair · 26/04/2020 18:37

I felt really sorry for her. She was shaking when she looked between her legs and saw it coming out. Not helped by the fact that she hadn’t been for three days and it was so long! I really hope next time is less scary.

That’s great @babycornplease! I’ll have a look at book. Dogs are so gross sometimes. I’ll never forget when one of my dogs ate my other dog’s sick when I was a kid.

I’d forgotten about poo goes to pooland. I had that before. Thanks for reminding me @Indecisivelurcher

Hi all!

I have just posted a ‘should we continue?’ Thread as we are also attempting potty training during lockdown. Will just paste what I said so sorry if you’ve seen this already:

Hi

My daughter is 22 months and we thought with lockdown we would have a go at potty training, I’m also pregnant and just would love to have her nappy free before baby. That said, I don’t want to force it if she’s not ready so just hoping someone can help if I describe where we are at.

We have started to introduce the potty after breakfast, after nap and before her bath. She has had wees before bath and this morning we plonked her on in time to do a poo and get lots of praise; which she followed up with a very near miss - I took this as a positive.

However in the afternoon she was reluctant to even sit on it. I don’t feel like we are making progress really, but I don’t know if I’m just expecting too much. I find the whole process very overwhelming and would really appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance x

Blurby · 26/04/2020 20:11

We've been slowly trying with our 21 month. Tonight's efforts resulted in him being sat on it for ages then going for a bare bum crawl where he shat underneath the piano Sad

TwistyHair · 26/04/2020 20:24

@mamablondie2 how long have you been trying? When is baby due?

TwistyHair · 26/04/2020 20:24

Oh @Blurby that’s disheartening.

SuddenArborealStop · 26/04/2020 20:57

Good day today, no accidents, he did start his poo in his shorts but he got upset and told me so got him on the potty, counting it as a win.
We're still having occasionally power struggles when I know he needs to go and he doesn't agree but he's extremely susceptible to bribery.

SuddenArborealStop · 27/04/2020 07:35

Any toddlers sleeping terribly at the moment, DS is waking several times a night crying and with newborn DD it's very hard. I'm hoping he's processing all the changes and will start sleeping again soon.

Jannt86 · 27/04/2020 07:46

@SuddenArborealStop mine has woken up 3 days in a row at 11ish and ended up in our bed for the rest of the night kicking me in the face Grin Might be the hot weather. We're putting her in vest only x

ReignsMummyX · 27/04/2020 08:08

I'm going to going here. My DD is 22 months and I've thought I may as well make a start whilst in lockdown. No experience what so ever for me but what I have done so far is bought a potty months ago now and just had it as a toy and dolls and teddies used the potty for wee wees and poo poos. But for the last couple of days been taking her nappy off and reminding DD every 5 mins or so if she needs the toilet use the potty. And so far it's going quite well, lots of wees on it. No poops yet but I'm not 100% sure she knows when she needs that yet. I've also bought a reward chart and some stickers on amazon for her. So for example if she uses the potty until lunch time she can have a special treat after lunch, ie, a chocolate instead of fruit. She loves stickers too so she gets a sticker every time she uses the potty. Going to cost a fortune in stickers I'm sure but if it helps her then who cares. 😄 any other advise is very appreciated

Caz1412 · 27/04/2020 08:13

im Obviously not going to as he has come so far but we started training a week before lockdown, so it’s been over a month now and the 3 days of accidents we have had make me want to give up!

He’s barely trying to make it to the potty, he’s like, ‘mum, wee’ and will just do it where he is and laugh.

There’s been a few times I’ve said no to something he wants, like chocolate or biscuits before dinner or for breakfast 🤦🏻‍♀️ And he’s sulked and then just weed where he is standing? (Could be that he’s distracted)

But my son is very clever and is always pushing boundaries, could it be more a challenging boundaries thing?

mamablondie2 · 27/04/2020 09:24

@TwistyHair baby is due September. Literally just started at the weekend, think I’m going to keep practising this week and then switch to the Oh Crap! method Saturday when myself/husband have no work to do. Lockdown is all well and good but working from home is actually a massive hindrance x

TwistyHair · 27/04/2020 12:11

Lol to asking to biscuits for breakfast @Caz1412. He sounds stubborn. And maybe it is a boundaries thing. I asked my daughter the other day if she needed a wee. She said ‘no, I need chocolate’ When I said no, she said ‘I need chocolate crisps’. They don’t even exist but she wanted them.

TwistyHair · 27/04/2020 12:12

@mamablondie2 it’s worth giving it a go. We didn’t do oh crap method but I know it’s worked well for some people. Quite labour intensive at the start though so good to start at weekend. I always say to people that if it doesn’t work out you can always stop and try again in a few months. 22 months is quite young to try but I get wanting to do it before baby is born.

YukoandHiro · 27/04/2020 12:34

@Caz1412 we've been going about 2.5 months and we're still having accidents most days! It's driving me bonkers. The only reason I haven't stopped is that in the middle we had a period of complete dryness but lockdown seems to have led to a regression. It's really getting on my nerves but trying to just stay relaxed and plough on as we're not out and about.
She's also really rubbish with poo - can't seem to anticipate it at all. She's 32 months

Caz1412 · 27/04/2020 12:41

Thank you, glad I’m not alone!
We had a period of complete dryness in the middle too! And I’ve lost all sense of timing with lockdown but we started before lockdown so I think we are actually about 6/7 weeks in!

Only one accident so far today, I’d been chasing him around and we had been dancing so he sat down on the carpet in exhaustion and started to wee and got up and ran to the potty so hopefully things will begin to improve again soon!

Caz1412 · 27/04/2020 12:45

@TwistyHair and yes he is sooo stubborn!

I just never thought my own stubbornness could backfire on me!
Here’s to hoping my daughters chilled out like her dad 🤣

TwistyHair · 27/04/2020 14:33

God we’ve had over an hour back and forth and sat on the toilet. Poo issues again. We’ve watched poo goes to pooland and pirate Pete. She’s still scared.
