Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

It’s great that she takes herself off for wees...

fascinated · 24/04/2020 16:31

We had lots of accidents once pants introduced, so just went back to bare bum. Took about ten days of bare bum to get secure.

MsChatterbox · 24/04/2020 16:38

@mum3085 hiya! For some reason when I put trousers on him alone he was weeing but when I put him in pants he was pulling them down! So then pants and trousers he managed to pull them down. He started off going very regularly too but now will leave a couple of hours before going! Good luck!

SuddenArborealStop · 24/04/2020 16:46

We're on day 5 and following oh crap, suppose we're in block two and will stay there because journeys out aren't happening anyway.
Mixed results so far DS is 2 years 4 months and stubborn as a mule, I feel he's able and all our issues are due to him not wanting to participate.
I'm prompting often and he's also gone unprompted today. Twice he cried that he was wet when he wasn't and then went for a wee after, I think he's either weeing a little and stopping or recognising the urge either is good.
The first poo was a day fighting but once it was done he was so proud and we rang his gran to tell her Grin today I waiting until he was proper farting before I suggested it and let him watch TV, done in ten minutes.

babycornplease · 24/04/2020 17:33

Mixed bag here today, all fine this morning, but two wee accidents this afternoon, she then produced a mightily impressive poo in the potty under her own steam that she was so proud of, excited shrieking of 'poo poo, biiiiiiigggg poo poo, look mummy!'... she carried it over to show me (in the potty I might add!).

Swings and roundabouts, I'd rather she had wee accidents than poo ones. But still.

She's still bare bummed at home... actually put suncream on her bum today, just in case 😂

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 18:09

Ugh so annoying here. We had a good morning. Fine for our trip out which was an hour and a half. But then two wee accidents this afternoon. She managed to stop one but the other was just massive. Part of it is that she drinks absolutely loads and then needs to go for a few big wees in a row. Still not sure whether to give up or not. It’s been a week. She’s still not going unprompted.

fascinated · 24/04/2020 18:51

I know you’ll be fed up hearing it, but:

Progress not perfection!

Is my motto

fascinated · 24/04/2020 18:53

It’s Friday night., #fancyfriday!

Don’t forget a wee treat for yourselves once dc safely asleep (nappied us in my case!) ... what’s everybody’s poison?!

I’ve had a wee glass of vino and some cheese

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 19:07

I’m not even sure there’s progress! So maybe ‘notgettingworse, not perfection’ can be my motto. We had another massive wee this evening. On carpet. She just stood up and weed. I got a bit annoyed and she cried. But did hold some in and finish on the toilet.

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 19:08

I’m drinking GnT

fascinated · 24/04/2020 19:38

Do you think she is enjoying being nappy free or somehow upset by it? (The crying is reason I ask).

Hard for you. I know.

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 20:05

She has now said she doesn’t like nappies and it’s a struggle to get them on her for naps and bedtime! She screams. She likes being nappy free but got upset coz I got annoyed with her. She knows she’s not supposed to wee on the floor. But I’ve asked her if she wants to wear nappies again and she doesn’t.

Kle209 · 24/04/2020 21:33

Glass of Prosecco here!

@TwistyHair it’s so hard not to get annoyed when you know that they can do it, but I think it’s important to remember the progress you’ve already made. It wasn’t that long ago that every single time was in a nappy and now she knows she doesn’t want to do it in a nappy any more. And I assume there have been some wees in the potty? It might only be baby steps and feel unbearably slow, but you are both doing a great job. Only you know whether it’s right for you to keep going or not, but remember there’s no wrong answer!

We’ve had a mixed day here too. Another couple of hours this morning with the poo dance, which ended with a poo in his trousers (on DH’s watch so not sure exactly how it happened), and then DH decided to put pants on DS. No wee accidents at all and he copped really well with pants on. But then we got to have another couple of hours of a poo dance, literally back and forth to the potty on average every 5 mins for about 2 hours, but that one ended with a poo on the toilet. Maybe 2 poos today might mean we have a break tomorrow?!!

Potty training is def two steps forward and one step back!

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 21:40

Thanks @kle209. She still does most wees in the toilet. But doesn’t self initiate. And will sometimes refuse to go if she’s busy. She also can hold her wee and stop it sometimes if she’s weed in her pants. I kind of wish we hadn’t bothered doing it. It was sooooo much easier with my older child who was 3. He just completely understood it and had hardly any accidents at all. A few on the first day and that was it.

TwistyHair · 24/04/2020 21:41

Sounds positive for you tho (apart from trouser poo)

Mum3085 · 24/04/2020 22:30

@fascinated yes its brilliant! Does the same for number 2s! I am amazed. Going to persevere.

Has anyone tried training pants?

Mum3085 · 24/04/2020 22:31

@MsChatterbox ahh great thank you. Will keep going for now and maybe introduce some pants in a week or so xx

babycornplease · 25/04/2020 08:58

@TwistyHair we are the same here with nappies for nap and night time, a complete battle to get them on her!

@Mum3085 I've bought some of the Jojo training pants for when we are out and about but looking at them, they are rather nappy like and not sure if they will help or hinder... have you tried them?

Mum3085 · 25/04/2020 09:05

@babycornplease no I haven't tried this but was looking at getting some, are they terry toweling pants?

babycornplease · 25/04/2020 09:11

@Mum3085 they are like massive pants with a absorbent internal pad... fairly bulky compared with her normal knickers...
Hang on, I'll take a pic!

babycornplease · 25/04/2020 09:15

Considerably bigger than normal ones!

Potty Training During Lockdown!
TwistyHair · 25/04/2020 10:02

It’s annoying, isn’t it @babycornplease. Anyway, no accidents yet this morning. And we’ve been up for 5.5 hours.

fascinated · 25/04/2020 11:38

I have them but never needed them as I used the Dry Like Me trading pads that I linked to earlier - like san pro so you just peel them off and bin if an accident, much easier clean up. Esp good for poo accidents. They do hold a little bit of wee though so good if child just sometimes doesn’t get there in time.

fascinated · 25/04/2020 11:39

Typo - training pads not trading (obviously!)

Jannt86 · 25/04/2020 11:43

First time with a dry nappy overnight here! We haven't been actively trying to tackle that yet and had a pullup on but she has been going straight to her potty and pulling her pullup down of her own accord first thing for a few days now. Do people think she'll gradually become dry overnight? I'm loosely following 'oh crap' but not sure I can be bothered with this waking her up overnight business unless there's any real benefits. Xx
